I agree. QB play will not be nearly as spectacular but will be significantly more consistent; a better game manager; Mertz played decently in the Spring game after being on the team a couple of months to learn the offense and receivers. The O line will be physical again and the running backs will get over 2000 yards by committee. The Defense will be lights out significantly better because of the new DC and philosophy. Our losses will be to UGA, LSU, and Arkansas, going 9-3.

You may as well call the defense a new roster with a new co ordinator, and the offense is also so new it's hard to place a performance forecast on. The program has made huge strides in its first season but it will be one of , if not the youngest roster in the SEC with some starters possibly being true freshmen. There is more talent everywhere, but too much youth for me to be comfortable predicting a won-lost record. This staff is legit, so I expect to see substantial improvement through-out the season, past that I have no idea until we've seen a few games. As long as we see a much improved on-field product at the end than we see at the first, I'll feel like UF is getting there.

We have less talent at the most important position.
Maybe not for this offense. It's run-heavy to force the defense to play their LB's shallow to stop the run which opens gaps and lanes in the pass-defense for short, high-percentage passes to the TE's and slot-receivers. Mertz has years of experience reading defensive sets. He should be fine.

He could be wrong but I trust Matthews is saying what he really believes.

He isn't a homer who always sees the best.

He said last offseason that he didn't think Richardson could improve his accuracy and he was right.

More talent everywhere?

More talent at QB (n)
More talent at WR (n)
More talent on OL (n)

No talent at TE

More talent at DL (y)
More talent at LB (y)

No change at RB, CB and S
I do not care where Richardson was drafted. He had All-World skills but made too many poor decisions to win consistently in the SEC (KY, UGA, Tenn, LSU....) except for Carolina and Utah, he did not play particularly well in any game; INCLUDING USF! Matthews is correct, he has actually played and coached the position.

AR had incredible physical gifts, but he also had Filipe Franks disease. As soon as he saw pressure his eyes turn to pie plates and his brain locked up. No one should worry about him though, early first round draft means his signing bonus was written with 8 digits. Wish him the best.

If Richardson had decided to come back you're saying you'd tell him no that you rather have Mertz.

I did not say that, and would not need to because Mertz would not have come here. Richardson not only threw too many balls to the other colored jersey, time and time again he would not keep on the Read Option and that was Napier's bread and butter for Anthony. I just happened to rewatch the Spring Game on the SEC Network yesterday and Mertz played pretty well when he was not running for his life, especially considering that he had only been with the team to learn the offense for about 2 months prior. To have outplayed Miller is not exactly worthy of praise, unless of course, you consider the short amount of time in the system. QB is extremely hard to learn mentally and I thought Mertz played very well. He scrambled well, threw into some tight windows, and avoided a considerable amount of pressure. If the O-line jells quickly, I see us losing to only LSU, UGA, and Arkansas.

I love that we are under the radar. Not a peep coming from Gainesville and we are completely invisible to the media, in general. Expectations are less than zero.

We will be a better team than last year albeit with a brutal schedule. If we had Georgia's schedule, I would be all in for 8 wins but we are going to need some good fortune with LSU, Georgia and non conference games at Utah and vs. Florida State. Also, three games we should win (Kentucky, Missouri and South Carolina) are on the road so we could easily lose one of those.

The loss to Vandy was so weird. Why didn't AR run the ball? Other than that, we were very competitive against good teams other than Georgia. We were within a score of LSU, at Tennessee and at FSU. We had some bad turnovers and gifted the game to Kentucky. We actually had a great defensive plan vs. Georgia. Bennett was completely confused by the dropping of DEs into coverage and whatever else we did. We just couldn't stop their RBs in the end. They are just way ahead of us (and mostly everyone) at the LOS.

I think this is a quietly confident team (like their coach) and if it stays that way all season. We should be in good shape, record be damned.
