I read the practice report and what I've seen on twitter but is there any kind of grade that you can give the three quarterbacks on how they did in the first week?
Is Mertz the guy?
Is Mertz the guy?
I think you try to get more from the people you like most. Coaches are not exempt from being human. And I've noticed that O'Sullivan smiles when he talks about Brown just like Napier does. He's been out-working everyone on the offense except for Mertz.Mertz is QB1 from what I’ve seen. Reps, rotations, overall performance, etc. I don’t know if I can say he’s “the guy” as in the one who will be the star (heck who knows what could happen this year). But he’ll be the starter.
I’m not one to usually give out grades (it’s hard to after limited availability for media at practice and then one full open practice), but I will say that it’s interesting to me how fast Max Brown has risen. He very well could be QB2 over Miller. That being said, he did have some mistakes today that irked Napier to a degree.
Since the guy who coached him was fired, and no one on here has seen a practice AND, more important than anything, Napier has forgotten more about coaching QBs than any of us knows, I trust his evaluation better than anyone on this site. At least he has a winning record as a starting QB which Anthony Richardson did not.For Mertz to be an 8 has to mean that every single person who saw him at Wisconsin has to be wrong about him.
That doesn't seem likely.
Mertz's ceiling is as a 7. He's more like a 5 and we have to hope he doesn't play like a 3 or 4.
