We can stop blaming coach Napier and start looking harder at Mertz being afraid to throw the ball deep because he rather trump up his completion percentage throwing short.

I don’t think he’s doing it to pad his completion percentage. I’d lean more towards he hasn’t been completing deep balls and he isn’t confident in throwing them right now. Mertz has been ok overall this year but that completion. Percentage is misleading as he’s not moving the ball deep.
I get the impression watching the games that we can't protect long enough to get these throws off but this one seems pretty clear. He had a few chances. I hope WRs open and not seeing them is more of the issue than protection because the former is infinitely more fixable...
