Don't you think we helped ourselves

I’d imagine we moved the needle with a lot of prospects. With NIL you probably don’t commit as much on visits without the business side being worked out first.

Gonzales is a very good recruiter and he spent several hours with Smith one on one, and you would think that was for film study and NIL discussion. This was UF's last shot to influence his decision as he's at OSU next weekend. You can be sure DJ will be in his ear all week, and Smith clearly enjoys being around DJ. UF is in as good a position as they could manage, the rest is up to Smith. My impressions so far, after reading a lot of post-visit interviews is that the staff did a great job on managing the weekend and getting the maximum positive effect with the recruits. I expect several commitments from this group. But I quit trying to predict what any one recruit is going to do because as a great motorsports driver once said, "what you do is get yourself in position to finish in the top three, the rest is luck". That was Mario Andretti, BTW, one of the luckiest drivers in motorsports history.

What hurts is when other teams get commitments on their visit weekends.

I'm staying positive about it all but I hope we see some movement this weekend.

10 years ago, UF was still seen as an elite program and kids wanted to be part of the Gator program. The program has lost a lot of its lustre since then. The job Napier agreed to take on is tough, rebuilding the image of the Gator football brand has to involve winning the big games and championships and that, in turn, involves recruiting at a high level to have a talented enough roster to win these big games and championships. This is the hard part, right now, competing with more successful programs for the elite athletes who all want to play on a winning program. Napier is doing fine. #5 recruiting class in the country and an official visit calendar that's loaded is a great start. UF is in good hands and is in great shape. You want to see what a problem program looks like, just look south to Miami. Recruiting the #26 ranked class doesn't get it done. We're good.
