My first reaction by the time the game was winding down was just like most of you. A sad mixture of disappointment, disgust and anger.
Disappointment because most of us have been anxiously awaiting all summer long for the return of college football and expecting the huge improvement we were supposed to see in Napier’s third season. I mean, let’s face it, by year three he is working mostly with players he brought in and has had plenty of time for his system to be completely installed.
Disgusted because we were just completely dominated again by a hated rival.
And anger, mostly at myself, for falling for all the hot air about what a great job this team has done all year preparing for this game and this season.
My initial reaction, as I have seen is the same for many of you, is I want this inept head coach gone as soon as possible.
I love college football but I lose my desire to even watch the other games when Florida is not even slightly relevant. Here we are in the first year of the twelve team playoff and we are even less likely to be still in contention for a spot by October 1st than Vandy.
Now that I’ve slept on it, I would like to tell you that I gained better perspective and I am ready to get behind our coach again because we desperately need him to be successful. But that is not the case. I do understand that there is zero chance he gets fired this week so we are stuck with his boring, mundane and ineffective offensive playing calling and inept defense for another season. Not that I think he will last the entire season but by the time he gets fired in early November following a 52-13 drumming by UGA it will be too late to fix anything this season.
Here is where I will summon up all the common sense I can apply to the debacle I witnessed yesterday. Here it goes….
It is only one game. Maybe two months from now we will find that Miami is the best team in country and we are on pace to finish 8-4. And if you believe I have some Led Zeppelin tickets to sell.
Reality is this. Napier and his poor coaching staff thought they had done their job well in preparation for yesterday's game. That means none of them know what championship level preparation even entails. Yet again, our defense has no idea where they are supposed to be on field or what their assignment is supposed to be. The offensive cannot run block or pass protect And our players are simply not being developed during strength and conditioning in the same manner as our opponents. It is my opinion that you could give Napier five more years and his Gator team would never be in the twelve team playoff.
So we get that we are stuck with another depressing season of Florida football. But please begin the process of finding Napier’s replacement and do not allow Scott Stricklin to pick that coach.
