Palo Alto (Calif.) Archbishop Riordan offensive tackle Kalolo Ta’aga may be committed to San Jose State, but that hasn’t kept four other P5 programs, including Florida, from extending an offer over the last couple of weeks.
The 6-foot-7, 265-pounder said he was offered by a Gators’ support staff member on Tuesday and will speak with an offensive line coach on Wednesday.
Quick Q&A
Did you have a favorite college team (or player) growing up?
“I didn’t have a favorite college team at all because I never knew a lot about football until I got to high school.”
You are new to football. How did you start playing and when was it?
“I’d been told that I would be good at football. When I started playing it took some weeks to get on a roll, but I’ve had lots of people who told me I look natural playing offensive line. I realized when colleges came to take a look and they were amazed it is when I decided to take on the game.”
Out of your early offers is there one or two that really caught your attention? A ‘wow’ moment?
“My first offers, of course, were ‘wow’ – even from D2 Minot State and Utah State.”
How did the Florida offer come about? Who did you communicate with and what did they have to say to you?
“I got offered by Florida over my film they watched and connections that my head coach has with the program. The person who first talked to me was Ross Bares. He gave me a warm welcome and told me a little about them.”
Have you spoken to any other UF coaches besides Bares?
“I have not talked to any of the other Florida coaches, but I am going to tomorrow [Wednesday] morning.”
What were a couple of your favorite campus visits so far?
“My favorite campus visit so far was to San Jose State, because they are the only school that I have visited.”
Do you have any plans to see any schools for a game this fall? Any official or unofficial visits set?
“I do have plans to see some schools, but that will be after the season so the schedules work out.”
After committing to San Jose State, you’ve started to blow up with offers from Arizona, Cal, Florida and Texas A&M. Where do you stand right now?
“I am committed to SJSU, but I am considering taking visits to these other schools. Right now I’m keeping my options open. Whichever school fits me, is the school I will be attending.”
What’s going to be important to you when you make your final choice?
“The most important thing for me and my final choice is family and how I feel with the people around me. And, the academics to create a new path other than football because when football is over you have to take on another career.”
Ta’aga is currently unranked by the On3 Consensus.
