Please Read: Welcome to the new-look Inside the Gators
In a marque SEC matchup, No. 6 Florida took down No. 1 Auburn, 90-81 in a statement victory from Todd Golden and his Gators.
They join a very elite club by beating two No.1 ranked teams (Tennessee at home, Auburn away) in the same season
Inside the Gators’ Instant Analysis takes a quick look at how the game unfolded.
IT WAS OVER WHEN: Florida went on a 29-9 run starting in the first half and continuing to the second half. This run gave Florida all the momentum and put them up by 21 at one point. The Tigers couldn’t claw back from the deficit this run created.
THEY STOLE THE SHOW: With the absence of Alijah Martin, Walter Clayton Jr. needed to step up if the Gators had any chance. He did just that.
Clayton Jr. finished the game with 19 points, nine assists, and five rebounds. What the stat line didn’t show was his ability to control the floor.
THESE STATS DON’T LIE: Florida went on a 29-9 run from the end of the first half into the beginning moments of the second half. Florida gave Auburn their largest deficit of the season. Florida’s 11 3-pointers made is the most Auburn has given up this season
Florida shot 40.7% from three, which is almost 5% higher than their season average.
THIS MATCHUP PROVED KEY: Florida’s Alex Condon vs Auburn’s Johni Broome was a great battle to watch. Both forwards are physical and technically gifted in the post.
Condon finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds, producing a double-double against one of the best bigs in the country.
WHAT A PLAY: Walter Clayton Jr. threw Alex Condon a lob and he viciously slams it in, killing Auburn’s momentum.
UP NEXT: The Gators (20-3, 7-3 SEC) take on Mississippi State (16-6, 4-5 SEC) on Tuesday, February 11. Tip-off is at 7:00 P.M. at Humphrey Coliseum.
