The Florida Gators (5-5) snapped their five-game losing streak to LSU (6-4) with a 27-16 win on Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The all-time rivalry series is now tied at 34-34-3.
Inside the Gators‘ Instant Analysis takes a quick look at how the game unfolded.
IT WAS OVER WHEN: Freshman Gators running back Jadan Baugh broke loose for a 55-yard touchdown run to give the team a 27-16 lead with 3:53 left in the game. It was the longest play of the game for either team and Baugh’s young career. Florida’s defense then took the field and held the Tigers to a prolonged drive that ended with a turnover on downs with 0:48 left.
THEY STOLE THE SHOW: The Gators’ pass rush showed up against the Tigers. LSU had allowed only six sacks before Saturday. The next closest team in the SEC was Vanderbilt and Florida with 13. The Gators had seven sacks on Saturday. Five different players had a sack for Florida. Shemar James had two sacks along with 11 tackles. Kamran James collected his first career sack in the fourth quarter. LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier completed just 57% of his pass attempts.
THESE STATS DON’T LIE: Besides their seven sacks, the Gators had 11 tackles for loss. Tyreak Sapp had eight tackles, a sack, and four tackles for loss. Freshman Myles Graham had seven tackles. The second-generation Gator has blossomed recently, with 15 tackles, a forced fumble, and a sack in his last three games. The Gators had seven penalties that cost them 55 yards. Gators kicker Trey Smack hit a 49-yard field goal and a career-high 55-yarder. Florida’s offense did not turn the ball over. Wide receiver Elijhah Badger caught six passes for 131 yards and a touchdown in his return from injury.
THIS MATCHUP PROVED KEY: The Tigers were without starting left guard Garrett Dellinger for the second consecutive game. Before missing last week’s game against Alabama, Dellinger had started the previous 20 games for the Tigers. Sapp beat backup Paul Mubenga for a sack on 3rd & 5 to set up a failed 4th & 12 that allowed the Gators offense to kneel the game out.
WHAT A PLAY: 3rd & 16 from their own 29, Nussmeier was strip-sacked by sophomore edge rusher TJ Searcy. 315 pound Tigers lineman Emery Jones Jr. picked up the ball and sprinted downfield where he collided with UF defensive tackle Caleb Banks. The ball was jarred loose again; this time recovered by Banks.
UP NEXT: Florida (5-5) has senior night against Ole Miss (8-2) on Saturday, Nov. 23. The game will be broadcast on ABC with kickoff at 12 p.m. It will be the first time the two teams have met since the 2020 season. Florida and Ole Miss are 12-12-1 against each other all-time. A win would make the Gators bowl eligible.
