Florida, limited by numerous injuries, limped their way into Texas Memorial Stadium to face No. 5 Texas. It got ugly fast, and the Orange and Blue had no chance of mounting a comeback. Florida lost 49-17 moving to 4-5 on the season, 2-4 in SEC play.
Inside the Gators‘ Instant Analysis takes a quick look at how the game unfolded.
IT WAS OVER WHEN:Florida kicker Trey Smack missed a 30-yard field goal early in the second quarter. Florida lost all its offensive momentum after Smack’s kick was wide right. The Gators defense couldn’t keep up with the Longhorns offense and allowed three more touchdowns before the end of the half. Florida trailed 35-0 heading into halftime.
THEY STOLE THE SHOW: Texas receiver Isaiah Bond did almost everything you can do as an offensive player. He finished with three receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Bond rushed for 44 yards. Also, the junior had an important block in the first half which helped Jaydon Blue on his 45-yard gain.
THESE STATS DON’T LIE:The Gators couldn’t get anything done in the air against the Longhorns. Florida finished the first half with just 64 yards passing compared to Texas’ 297. Although the Orange and Blue had a fantastic day rushing the football, you can’t beat a team like the Horns if you can’t convert on throws down the field. Aidan Warner finished the afternoon 12-of-25 for 132 yards and two interceptions.
THIS MATCHUP PROVED KEY: Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers had a field day picking apart the injured Florida secondary. The Heisman candidate found his receivers with ease finishing the afternoon with five passing touchdowns. Due to Texas’ domination, Ewers was taken out in the third quarter. The Horns’ quarterback had five players who had over 40 yards receiving. Jaydon Blue and Matthew Golden had over 60 yards receiving.
WHAT A PLAY:There is nothinglike a one play touchdown drive. On the play action pass, Ewers rolled right, shifting Florida’s defense, before throwing to running back Quintrevion Wisner who was on his left. The sophomore had blockers ahead and took it 50-yards to the house. The drive lasted just 11 seconds.
UP NEXT:After this embarrassing loss, the Florida Gators are home to face the No. 14 LSU Tigers. The Tigers (6-2, 3-1) face No. 11 Alabama (6-2, 3-2) tonight in what is likely a College Football Playoff eliminator.
