Earlier this week Florida extended an offer to River Ridge (La.) John Curtis three-star athlete Michael Turner.
The 6-foot-1, 175-pounder talks about how the offer came about, where the Gators stand, and more.
QUICK Q&A
Did you have a favorite college team, or player, growing up? “Growing up I would say my favorite college team was LSU and my favorite player around that time, growing up, I would say was Malachi Dupre. I would say him because growing up people say me and him played almost alike and that he attended the high school I was going to be attending.”
You have some impressive early offers, but is there one or two that really caught your attention? A ‘wow’ moment? “I would say some really crazy offers that caught my attention were Florida, Ole Miss and Nebraska.”
How did the Florida offer come about? “Last week my trainer called me the day after his birthday saying how a Florida coach woke him up by calling and texting him asking about me. One day last week one of the Florida coaches followed me and I responded, ‘Thanks for the follow coach’ and he responded and told me to text him so we started communicating. Then we just stopped for a few days. Yesterday coach [Jabbar] Juluke and [Billy] Gonzales called and talked to me, and Coach Gonzales offered me. Coach Juluke talked to me and was telling me about how he coached at Karr and stuff like how he recruits the New Orleans area and things like that. Coach Gonzales was asking me stuff about my family, have I ever thought about when I will commit, and also things I look for in committing to a college. Things like that.”
What is your initial impression of Florida? “My early impressions of Florida is that they really caught my eye immediately like it was something that shocked me. They are definitely one of my top schools.”
What are some of the college campus visits that were your favorites? “I’ve only visited one college so far, which was Tulane. So, I really haven’t had any great experiences yet, but I can wait to plan to go on many more.”
Do you have any plans to make it to Florida? “I am 100 percent going too make a trip to Florida.”
Do you have a leader or leaders or do you know of a couple of programs that will be there until the end? “I would say schools that will be there until the very end would be Florida, Nebraska, UAB, and La Tech for sure. It’s just the way they go so hard trying to get me to commit and come on campus and things like that.”
When you make your decision what will be important to you? “For the coaches to have the same energy and the way they acted towards when they first offered me, the first day we talked. Also for the place to feel like home and also a great academic program.”
Turner is unranked according to the On3 Consensus.
