Gardner-Johnson believes Gators will continue streaking

Dan Mullen was thrilled with the crowd that showed up for the Florida Gators (1-0, 0-0) home opener against Charleston Southern. The announced attendance was 81,164 but that’s still well short of the sold out near 90K (88,548) that can pack the Swamp on a gameday. When the Gators step back into their home stadium this coming Saturday though, Mullen is asking for fans to fill the seats and help his team in their SEC opener against the Kentucky Wildcats (1-0, 0-0)—a game that can determine the course of the season.

“When you get into conference play its just a little bit different,” Mullen told reporters on Monday.

“And the first game is always critical, of the conference, to get a win. It kind of catapults you in the right direction; you’re not fighting an uphill battle the rest of the season. Obviously, it’s going to be a really big game for us. Like I said after the game, I was really pleased with the crowd turnout and with our fans. You hope you get an even bigger crowd this week, more home field advantage, maybe louder, even rowdier for the kickoff of SEC play. It’s going to be a tough game.”

The players are hoping/anticipating this as well explains corner Marco Wilson.

“It’s going to be a lot more energized Saturday considering it’s a SEC game. It should be a real exciting environment Saturday.”

The 1993 SEC Championship team will be recognized during the game as well, on the 25th anniversary of the school’s first league title, something Mullen says will be fun for fans to experience.

But fans aren’t the only ones that Dan Mullen is pushing to remember the importance of this game…and it has nothing to do with a certain streak.

The Gators have beat Kentucky 31 years in a row, the longest active streak in an uninterrupted series.

“I don’t know what that has to do with the game this week,” stated Mullen.

“Our guys didn’t have a whole lot to do with that, and neither did the guys on their team. Nobody, really. It is what it is. I don’t know what affect that has on this week’s game. It’s going to be two good teams going out to play each other. Just go play.

“I imagine, one day, the streak will be broken. That’s just the nature of sports. I hope [it’s not us.] To me, we want to go win the game because it’s our SEC opener. That’s got to be the whole focus, and not worry about anything else.”

Nickel Chauncey Gardner-Johnson though would like to point out he has been apart of two of them—the 45-17 win in 2016 and the 28-27 win in 2017—and he says after Saturday is over he’ll have been apart of three.

“I contributed two of them, my freshman year, special teams, last year, defense. It’s 31, right? It’ll be 32 after Saturday.”

While confident, CGJ makes it clear that he understands the streak is motivation for a talented Wildcats team who won came back from a deficit to win their opener 35-20 against Central Michigan.

“At the end of the day, they got some good players. They’re disciplined. They play us hard every year. They coming in with a chip on their shoulder that they can beat us. It’s going to be in the Swamp. So, at the end of the day, our team though is capable, and we know what’s going to happen Saturday. We just got to go out there and play, execute our game plan and just do what we got to do.”

The Gators will kick off at 7:30pmET on SEC Network.
