Confirmation: Mullen out as Florida head coach

November 21, 2021

As first reported by Chris Low of ESPN, and then independently verified by Inside the Gators, Florida Head Football Coach Dan Mullen has been fired.

The move, which has been bubbling for weeks, comes just a year after Mullen agreed to a new five-year contract extension following his first SEC East victory. This season has gone sideways with Saturday’s loss pushing the Gators conference record to 2-6 for the season and 5-6 overall. After a 3-1 start with a decisive win over Tennessee and a close loss to Alabama, Florida’s season went sideways, with losses to LSU, South Carolina, and Missouri, as well as an inexplicably close win over FCS Samford.

Aside from on-field results, Mullen also faced a one-year show-cause penalty for recruiting violation from the NCAA, and many have criticized Florida’s recruiting success, with only two top ten classes (both ranked ninth) per 247Sports.

Mullen seemed like a strong option to lead the Florida program when he was hired in 2018, with success as the Gators’ offensive coordinator under Urban Meyer and nine strong seasons as the head coach at Mississippi State. His tenure at Florida started promisingly, with back-to-back ten win seasons and an 8-1 start in 2020, but he’s only 5-9 since last year’s LSU game, and just 2-9 against Power Five opponents.

Mullen finishes his tenure at Florida with a 34-15 record, two New Year’s Six bowl victories, one SEC Championship appearance, and a 1-3 record against Georgia.

Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Greg Know is reported to be the interim head coach for the Florida State game (and a potential bowl game).

Confirmation through Florida Sports Information:

The University of Florida has parted ways with football Head Coach Dan Mullen, Athletics Director Scott Stricklin announced Sunday.

Special Teams Coordinator / Running Backs Coach Greg Knox will serve as interim coach for the FSU game.

A veteran of 20-plus seasons in the SEC, including four at Florida, Knox has previously also served as interim coach at Mississippi State in 2017, leading the Bulldogs to a 31-27 win over Louisville in the TayxSlayer Bowl.

Mullen finished with a 34-15 record at UF after four seasons at the helm.

During his tenure at Florida, Mullen won 21 SEC games and led the Gators to three New Year Six Bowls and the SEC Championship Game in 2020.

The Gators are 5-6 (2-6 SEC) in 2021.

Stricklin will hold a press conference at 3 p.m. ET.
