Dan Mullen met with media on Monday to talk about spring practices, getting fans back in the Swamp, his weekend at TPC Sawgrass, and more.

Here are the highlights.

  • Earlier in the year he promoted Garrick McGee from the support staff to quarterbacks’ coach. Since this is where Mullen found much of his specialty dating all the way back to Tim Tebow, Mullen says that he and McGee have some common ground. “There’s a lot we collaborate on,” he said.
  • Mullen said that he is very involved in coaching the quarterbacks as well as the entire team. The biggest key for McGee is “being comfortable with me coming in and out of the room at different times,” Mullen added.
  • Despite having similar philosophies and expectations, the two are very different. Mullen says that this is a good thing, especially for the players. “Players can hear it differently.”
  • One of the most exciting things about the new offense is the potential for more of a run game. Mullen says the success of the offense will be up to the focus of the guys.
  • When it comes to evaluating the run game, Mullen said that last year was a success. While the run plays may not have been seen often, when they were, they were efficient. But there is still room to improve. “The biggest thing we’re missing right now in our guys is consistency. Too many small mistakes being made.”
  • Mullen continued talking about the offense saying that they were still in the evaluating stage. “We can be anything we want to be,” Mullen added, “The key is to make sure you’re fitting around the strength of your players.”
  • He also dubbed their system of offense as a ‘pro-style’ system. That they look for ways to create flexibility in order to take advantage of the field and matchups.
  • Mullen also discussed the different situations that come with having two quarterbacks in Emory Jones and Anthony Richardson. He continued to say that depending on who is on the field changes things for everyone, for the offensive line, for the wide receivers, and for the running backs. It gives him a lot of flexibility and creativity.
  • Perhaps the biggest game on the fall schedule is Alabama. “We were six points short of beating Alabama last year,” Mullen said. The line for victory was not far for Florida last year, and Mullen is hopeful in the development of his team. “The quarterbacks are growing. They’re developing.”
  • “The most important time for a quarterback is the end of spring ball to the start of fall training camp,” Mullen continued.
  • Mullen, who got into some heat for his ‘pack’ the Swamp comments last fall, hopes to see as many fans as possible next season. “I was at Sawgrass this weekend, at The Players,” he said, “You can feel the energy and the excitement of people.” He continued saying how badly people want to be fans again. “It’s much bigger to say ‘I was there. I saw that play’.”
  • Mullen also talked about his trip to TPC this past weekend and how he enjoyed sitting on No. 17 for a while. “How is that not a major,” he joked.
  • “Start with your worst play and work up,” Mullen said was the key to growing and developing as a player.
  • Mullen also discussed Brenton Cox Jr.’s performance so far in spring. He said there are still some things he is working on to become more consistent. “Makes huge production, but there are still some critical errors in there.”
  • He finished things off talking about the end of the recruiting dead period and awaiting NCAA schedule. He does not want there to be a ‘mad rush’ of recruits coming to campus and possibly creating a COVID spike within his program. In the off time, he expects the players to be training and watching film. “Guys learn more from watching themselves,” he said.
