Linebacker Mohamound Diabate, running back Dameon Pierce, and safety Trey Dean spoke with the media Monday evening about the first full week of practices, the first day in pads, having so many running backs, and more.

Here are the highlights:

  • Mohamound Diabate is happy with starting practice early. He also thinks that spring practice this year will allow the defense to clean up some of the problems it suffered through last season.
  • Another reason why Diabate was excited to have spring practice was because of the drastic changes heading into last season. With no spring practice in 2020, he came into fall camp switching to a new position after being a defensive end his entire life. Now having spring practice, he can really focus on learning his new role.
  • He said he lost between seven to eight pounds last season. But he put some weight back on going into spring camp.
  • Today’s practice was the first with full pads. “It was great. I felt ‘turnt’,” Diabate said.
  • “Crushing heads. Head-to-head. Starting the day,” Diabate said, “Wake up!”
  • “It was a great way to start the day.”
  • When asked about the number of running backs on the roster this spring, Dameon Pierce commented, “The more the merrier. More people to learn from.”
  • Pierce is entering his senior season. “With me being one of the older guys in the room, it changed me a lot.”
  • With the full-pad practice, the offensive line was getting their first real contact of the spring. “It’s becoming a more cohesive unit,” Pierce said about the players up-front.
  • Despite having so many guys competing for the running back spot, Pierce is confident no matter who is in, the job will be done well. “We all make sure that we all on the same page. So, it doesn’t matter who’s in. The job is going to get done at a very high level.”
  • Additionally, Pierce is excited to see Emory Jones step up as the leader of the offense. When asked about the lack of run game seen in previous years, Pierce responded jokingly saying “Why would you not throw to the No. 1 tight end in the world in Kyle Pitts?” However, he is excited to see Jones finally get his time as the presumptive starting quarterback. “He is ready when his number is called,” Pierce said.
  • Earlier this week Trey Dean garnered plenty of social media attention after posting an Instagram story featuring a set of handcuffs. He started the trend to add some “competitive edge” to practice. “Every time we going to give our all and lock the receivers up,” Dean said.
  • Dean commented on his versatility, which has enabled him to play corner, Star, and safety during his time in Gainesville. “I find most beneficial where the team needs me to play.” Now, he has stepped into a leadership role on the team.
  • Dean also discussed the new safeties hire Wesley McGriff. “I think he’s second to none.”
  • The 2020 season saw Florida emerge as a pass-first type of offense, featuring standout receivers such as Pitts, Kadarius Toney, and Trevon Grimes. While losing those three, along with Kyle Trask, will put a new spin on the offense, Dean does not see this as a disadvantage. “All of our receivers are going to surprise you, Dean added, “Emory Jones can throw the ball just as well as Trask.”
  • “I’m always going to have a lot of chances to make plays,” Dean said, “One play in a whole game don’t define if you win or you lose.”
