If players are willing to give Mullen a pass for some of the things he said this year we fans should too.
We aren't going to do any better than what we have with him.
We probably take a step back next year and then have a big 2022.
If it was just some of the things he said...maybe. But it isn't.
Its lazy recruiting. And not only that, he somehow gets a showcause recruiting violation while landing another dismal lazy recruiting class. He has repaired some relationships that the previous coaching staff f'd up, but his recruiting is bad and obviously not getting any better.
Its putting the worst defense on the field since 1917. Ive read some articles that try to justify it by using stats to make it seem like it isn't as bad as it looked but all anyone has to do is watch the games and they will see a defense that was consistently lined up wrong, confused, bad angles, poor discipline and just a general lack of any look of competence at any time. The only position group that seemed to improve was the DL but that probably has more to do with getting some depth back a few games into the season. When Mullen took over UF, this program had a broke offense but the defense was solid. While we have to give credit to Mullen for turning the offense around (and the offense has improved every single year) we have to give credit to Mullen for the defense going from better than good to pathetic. When we watch the offense this year, its obvious they are well coached and have a solid understanding of what is going on and know their assignments. The defense is the exact opposite. Horrible. Mullen is the head coach and it is obvious he isn't very involved on the defense. And Grantham is coming back. ***?
Its taking the bowl game off and declaring it meaningless. That was embarrassing. It was pathetic. He gets $6mil a year to coach the football team for an entire year and he mails in the bowl game? Then he has the nerve to blow it off in the presser as if it didn't matter? How many of you would be fired in a Monday morning meeting at your job if you blew off a big task at work and then tell your customers and bosses it was meaningless and didn't matter? I would.
Its considering all the above, then floating interest in the NFL out there so you can get a contract extension.
What makes you think we will have a big year in 2022? Was it another pathetic recruiting class? Was it retaining the overpaid Grantham?
2021 is going to be a bad year and I believe 2022 will be worse. I thank Mullen for trying and actually doing a great job of turning the offense around, but it is becoming painfully obvious that we will always be 2nd in the East and honorable mention in meaningless bowl games from here on out.
