After signing with Miami as a five-star prospect in the Class of 2018 Lorenzo Lingard spent two nondescript seasons with the Hurricanes, gaining only 136-yards on 17 carries in two injury-filled seasons, before transferring to Florida back in January.

On Friday evening Lingard announced via Twitter that he would be granted immediate eligibility for the Gators to compete during the upcoming football season.

Inside the Gators takes a closer look at the situation with this Impact Analysis.

WHY THIS MATTERS: While he may not have lived up to expectations in Coral Gables, talking to those who know him best that was mostly due to his injury situation and the fact that he really didn’t feel like the Hurricanes and the city were a good fit for him.

“He’s not a city type kid,” said his high school offensive coordinator Justin Roberts. “He’s not an extrovert, going out or anything like that. He’s much to himself. You put him in some woods or on a lake, and he’ll entertain himself for the whole day. So, I think [Florida’s] just a better fit from a whole town perspective.”

Watching his high school tape, he is the most physically gifted running back currently on the roster and though Florida loves to rotate backs, it wouldn’t be the least bit surprising if Lingard ends up being the go-to guy during the 2020 season.

Until we see him on the field though, there will be questions remaining about his health.

BETWEEN THE LINES: In our Anonymous Player Q&A – Lingard was a player who was singled out as having a terrific off-season.

“I think they [Brenton Cox and Lingard] need to be eligible as soon as possible because Zo [Lorenzo Lingard] has got something about him. If you took a vote by the players on who they really want to see go get it this spring he would win hands-down. He loves the strain and putting in the extra work.”

WHAT’S NEXT: We’ll see how they line up during fall football practice. Though he will likely be rewarded for being such a hard worker during the offseason, it will likely still be Dameon Pierce sitting atop the depth chart at the start of fall ball.

However, with Lingard’s combination of size, speed and work ethic, and Dan Mullen’s affinity for getting the ball in the hands of his playmakers, it’s not hard to see Lingard being given every chance to be a difference-maker for the Gators.

IMPACT RATING: 8/10
