Following the No. 6 Florida Gators (7-2, 4-2) 24-17 defeat to the No. 8 Georgia Bulldogs (7-1, 4-1), head coach Dan Mullen met with the media to discuss moments from the game, third-down struggles and the mindset for the program going forward.

Here are the highlights:

  • Mullen said this game was decided by a number of ‘little things’. He says the margin for error is small.
  • Some key factors according to Mullen were the inability to force turnovers and negative plays offensively.
  • Mullen said the length of the Gators last drive had nothing to do with getting the defense rest. Says they didn’t want to panic down two-scores.
  • For the most part, Mullen thought the offense played okay. Mentioned the negative plays and said they wish they would’ve been able to run more plays.
  • Mullen said the controversial call leading to Georgia’s first touchdown was the biggest play of the game.
  • On the controversial call, Mullen said he didn’t receive an explanation and the call game from league officials in Birmingham.
  • Mullen said missed tackles, blown coverages and the calls from the officials were all factors in their third-down struggles.
  • He said there’s still a lot of football left to be played and the division is still up for grabs. Said Vanderbilt next week is another big game.
  • On the early timeout’s he was forced to call, Mullen said they had the wrong personnel on the field for the first one and only 10 men on the field for the second.
  • When asked if injuries played a factor, Mullen simply said it has to be the ‘next man up’ mentality.
  • Mullen said they wanted to get Kadarius Toney some touches early, but being down on the scoreboard prevented them from following that game plan.
  • Mullen said they felt that Georgia doesn’t play well from behind, so for them to get down early was ‘crushing’.
  • On Kyle Trask’s 19-yard sack, Mullen said it will be a learning thing for him.
  • He said adversity tests your character and what happened on the field doesn’t define them.
  • Mullen said Florida is ‘7 points away’ from where the Bulldogs are as a program, and then added that they have to coach better to eliminate any mental lapses.
