Inside the Gators spoke with Fort Myers (Fla.) Dunbar 2021 defensive tackle Christopher Thomas‍ on Saturday after he visited Florida for the Gators win over Tennessee.

He told us at that point Florida was the leader over Florida State and Texas A&M.

On Monday evening he committed to UF:

In the 2019 recruiting cycle Florida made a run at Fort Myers (Fla.) Dunbar defensive tackle Derick Hunter‍, but came up short in the end. That though wouldn't be the end of the Gators seeking out defensive linemen from the school.

This past summer 2021 defensive tackle Christopher Thomas earned an offer from UF after camping with the Gators in June.

On Saturday the 6-foot-5, 290-pounder was in attendance when Florida faced off against Tennessee.

After the game, he said he saw enough to name a leader.

“It’s top on my list right now,” Thomas said of Florida.

The Dunbar High School product is a fan of the Gators' nation leading sack defense in particular.

“I love how the d-line plays,” Thomas said. “Everybody makes plays, nobody’s selfish, you can see how everybody’s getting their job done because the linebackers make plays too.”

Florida’s defense held the Volunteers to just three points on Saturday and Thomas felt that the coaching has a big impact on how they play and says that he has gotten along with everyone on the staff.

“I like how the staff treats me,” Thomas said. “They’re always talking to me, they’re not afraid to tell me how they feel and, you know, pull me aside like I said before. I’ve got a great relationship with the coaches right now.”

When asked what the staff’s biggest message was to him, Walker couldn’t help but laugh.

“Stay out of trouble,” Thomas said.”

When asked why Florida holds the top spot, Thomas’ answers had to do with off-the-field facets of his life.

“Probably because I’m not too far away from home and it’s just the feeling I get,” Thomas said. “It’s a place I can call home and it’s a place I can come not only for football but for academics and, you know, getting me ready for the real world once I leave school.”

Thomas also said that the earliest he would commit to a school would be over the summer and is planning to graduate from Dunbar in January 2020 so he can enroll early to whichever college he chooses.

Despite all the positives from the visit, Texas A&M, where his former teammate Hunter signed, plays a big role in Thomas’ recruiting process well.

Thomas has Florida, Florida State and Texas A&M in his top three and was unsure whether or not he will visit Florida State or Florida next week during his bye week.
