Dan Mullen hasn’t been afraid to utilize the transfer portal in his brief time at UF.

Prior to the 2018 season, he added receiver Van Jefferson from Ole Miss, receiver Trevon Grimes from Ohio State and Adam Shuler from West Virginia. This offseason, he reeled in Jonathan Greenard from Louisville.

Mullen might’ve just hauled in his biggest one yet. Former Georgia defensive end/outside linebacker Brenton Cox has enrolled at UF and will practice with the team on Friday, the school confirmed. He becomes the only composite five-star on the Gators’ roster. He has three years of eligibility remaining, but he will need to get a waiver approved by the NCAA to be eligible this season.

Cox, from Stockbridge, Georgia, committed to Ohio State in April 2017. He backed out of his commitment two weeks before signing day in December 2017 and enrolled early at UGA. He played in 13 games for the Bulldogs and made 20 tackles, including two for a loss and a sack. He ranked third on the team with three pass breakups. He made his first career start against Texas in the Sugar Bowl and recorded six tackles.

Cox projected as a starting linebacker this season before he ran into some trouble. He was arrested in April for misdemeanor marijuana possession. Rivals reported earlier this week that Georgia coach Kirby Smart dismissed him from the team with no stated reason.

He now has a fresh start at Florida, where he’ll have an excellent shot at earning a starting job next season. Even if his waiver doesn’t get approved by the NCAA, the Gators will lose Jabari Zuniga and Greenard following the 2019 season. At 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, he has the size and athleticism to play Buck or strong-side defensive end or even linebacker if needed.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
This is a really good pick up!

Will be interesting to see where he lines up: Buck (Polite), or OLB (Joseph), or SDE (Zunega)....and how the staff shifts others around as a result.

Do you think it is feasible that he could take OLB (Joseph) spot, move Burney to STAR, and move Dean to safety.....just a thought.

I also wonder, based on how quickly they got him in and practicing (yesterday and today) if they suspect he can get a waiver to play this year...why else would they appear to be rushing him out there?

Good day today!

If he applies for and receives a waiver, I could see a scenario where they put Cox at outside linebacker, move Burney to Star and Dean to safety in obvious passing situations. It'll probably be tough to get him eligible for this season, though.

Wasn't he the dude that got slapped on the sideline by his own teammate last year?

He was the guy at the UA AA Game that dominated on D. I texted my UGA buddy ...and said holy hell did you guys strike gold.

If he falls in line and isn't a knucklehead... this is a YUGE get!

....unless unforeseen nerd pie charts & graphs tell us otherwise
