Less then a week ago Arlington (Tx.) four-star cornerback Jahari Rogers‍ announced his commitment to Florida over home-state Texas.

On Saturday he talked about the reason behind that choice and when he knew he was ready to make his pledge.

Though he didn't make his announcement until July 15, according to Rogers he knew where he wanted to go a couple of weeks earlier.

“Right after my Texas visit I talked to my parents, I prayed about it and I talked to Coach [Torrian] Gray and Coach [Dan] Mullen again and I felt like it was time,” said Rogers. “Really when I was at The Opening, that's when I knew I wanted to do it.”

Though prospects are urged to pick a school based on the school and not a coach – who could be gone before he even sets foot on campus, Rogers admitted that what sold him on the Orange & Blue was the Florida staff.

“The coaching staff is unbelievable,” said Rogers. “I know a lot of people say that you shouldn't get close to the coaching staff, but really they are the main reason I committed. I feel like they can bring something great out of me as a player, and that's what I want.

“The players are super awesome too. When I went on my visit it felt like home.”

Two weeks ago at The Opening Rogers raved about Florida cornerbacks coach Torrian Gray, unapologetically calling him the best cornerbacks coach in the nation.

“It’s different. They’ve got dogs on their team. You want to play with dogs. They’ve got the best cornerback coach in all of college football," said Rogers back then. "I know I’m going to get a little flack for that, but that’s the truth. I vibed with him heavy. Coach [Dan] Mullen is cool and like I said, they’ve got dogs on the team.”

That connection is only getting stronger.

“Coach Gray is my position coach, he's who I really connected with so fast. I just felt like he was the right coach for me when I went down there.”

Another calling card for Florida is the Gators tradition of turning out top players in the secondary.

“That's what you want,” replied Rogers when asked about being part of DBU. “I want to compete. Just knowing the legacy that they have and that one day my name might go down in history as one of the greats to come out of Florida. That is what I'm striving for a player, as a recruit, to go there and be as great as I can be. I feel like if I try to do that, everything else will take care of itself.”

When Rogers says he is familiar with the history at Florida, it isn't just lip service. He has two players in particular that he models his game after.

Vernon [Hargreaves III] when he was there and Chris [C.J. Henderson] whose there now,” said Rogers when he was asked who he looks up to. “I don't really care what anybody has to say, strictly as a corner, he is the best in the SEC. He's who I really look up to. Seeing that I could potentially be in their shoes one day is amazing.”

Now that the choice has been made, according to the 6-foot, 170-pound corner he plans on getting back to Gainesville a couple of times this year.

“I know I'm going to a couple of games for sure and I'm thinking about Friday Night Lights,” said Rogers. “I really want to go see the Miami game.”

Those trips to Florida may not be his only remaining trip.

Rogers has taken three official visits – to Arkansas, Florida and Texas – in the spring and summer, but he said that because of the timing of those visits, he didn't get to experience something he has wanted to experience – an official visit over a game day weekend.

“I want to take an OV on a game day,” said Rogers, before reassuring the Gator Nation. “But I'm locked in.”

When asked if he has a message for the Florida faithful, he replied, “It's the real DBU.”

Rogers is the No. 154 ranked prospect in the nation according to the 247 Sports Composite

If I were a top kid, I will take all five of my official visits. I think you can be locked in and still take an official visit. It's when you start taking multiple visits to places, especially unofficially, that this probably something going on.
