Need to Know

  • This didn’t exactly come out of left field. Two weeks ago, in an update from The Opening, he told us that he was down to a final two of Florida and Texas - while absolutely raving about Gators cornerbacks coach Torrian Gray. He sounded so high on Florida at that point that we included him in our latest Mock Signing Class 5.0 just days later.
  • When you think of Florida football recruiting you don’t necessarily think of Texas, but not only does Rogers join Avery Helm‍ to make up 2/3 of Florida’s cornerback commitments, but this is the second year in a row (Arjei Henderson‍ in 2019) and fifth time in the last six cycles (safety Donovan Stiner in 2017, receiver Tyrie Cleveland and quarterback Kyle Trask in 2016 and linebacker Kylan Johnson in 2015)  that the Gators have landed a prospect from the Lone Star State.

Board Impact

Nabbing Rogers helps solidify what became more of a need position with the departure of Chris Steele a couple of months ago. If Florida holds on to Helm and Rogers, even with Fenley Graham‍ committed, you would think that the Gators would still take one more cornerback to fill out the class. There are some names out there, such as Ethan Pouncey‍ and Jahquez Robinson‍, but the Gators aren’t a leader for either of them.

The Services Say

All three services list Rogers as a four-star, top 200 prospect. Really none of them are out in left field with him, all have him within 44 spots of each other from a low of No. 189 on Rivals to a high of No. 143 on 247

With all of the defensive back talent available instate, who would have thought several months ago that Florida’s top two cornerback commits would hail from the Lone Star State? As of today, he was probably Florida’s top target remaining at cornerback as far as kids they had a legitimate chance of landing (again, as of this moment) making this commitment rating about an 7½ on the 1-to-10 scale.

The Bottom Line

At the start of the cycle many in the Gator Nation has their sights set on the likes of Fred Davis‍, Luke Hill‍ and Henry Gray‍, but it isn't as though Florida is getting leftovers when it comes to Helm and now Rogers - with each being considered top 15 type cornerbacks in the nation. The question now is how many cornerbacks will the Gators take and is Graham thought of as more of a returner or a defensive back?
