Five Florida Gators Drafted: Weekend Recap

April 28, 2019

For the first time since 2012, no Florida Gators were taken in the first round of the NFL Draft. The 2019 edition did see five players drafted though with two more signed as undrafted free agents and an additional two getting an opportunity at upcoming training camp tryouts.

After being projected as a Top 15 pick, offensive lineman Jawaan Taylor ended up falling to the 2nd round. There he was picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team he had been projected to with the 7th overall pick. Reports surfaced saying some teams bumped him down due to an apparent knee injury. Ironically Taylor played through injuries and three straight season while at Florida. Taylor had been invited to Nashville for the first round and elected to stay for the second day to have the long dreamed of moment on stage. The Jaguars traded up to grab Taylor early in the 2nd, leading VP Tom Coughlin to say grabbing Taylor in the 2nd round “made the draft” for Jacksonville, seeing it as getting two 1st rounders (along with Kentucky’s Josh Allen in the 1st).

Defensive end Jachai Polite had also been a projected first rounder during the season but fell some after a sub-par Combine performance and purported botched interviews. Polite admitted those shortcomings at the Gators Pro Day and vowed to make up for them in meetings. As such he didn’t fall too, too far, getting drafted by the New York Jets in the 3rd round. He joins former Gators Marcus May and Brian Poole in New York.

Defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson had been projected as a Day 2 guy possibly (2nd or 3rd round) but had to wait until Day 3. In the end though he was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the 4th round, joining former Gator Alex Anzalone in the Cresent City. Gardner-Johnson was only the Saints second pick in the draft this year and the team traded up to grab him early in the 4th round.

Linebacker Vosean Joseph got his opportunity when drafted in the 5th round by the Buffalo Bills and just a few picks later, the Carolina Panthers took running back Jordan Scarlett.

With Taylor, Polite, Gardner-Johnson and Joseph all being drafted, that means all of the Gators early departure juniors landed with a NFL team.

Defensive lineman Khairi Clark signed as an undrafted free agent with the Jaguars and offensive lineman Fred Johnson did the same with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Offensive lineman Tyler Jordan will get a shot with the Atlanta Falcons as a tryout at an upcoming camp and defensive lineman CeCe Jefferson will look to impress doing the same with the Seattle Seahawks.
