Inside the Gators: Mock Signing Class 2.0

The biggest question on the mind of those who follow recruiting religiously is what will Florida's final class look like?

How will it all shake out?

The truth is, no one knows for sure.

Not Dan Mullen, not his staff, not you and to be clear, neither do I. There are too many variables in play. Multiple prospects, injuries, transfers, wins, losses new hires, new firings, etc...

You name it, and it could cause a prospect to look at a program differently – which in turn could throw everything into turmoil.

With the Gators still needing two quarterbacks in this class, it will be interesting to see who they visit when the spring-eval period kicks off later this month and if any new offers go out at the position.
Why do you think they need 2 this class? Even if you assume they lose Trasks to transfer, adding 2 more would give them 5 (Franks, E Jones, J Jones, 2 TBD). Are you assuming someone else leaves?

The need at the position is nowhere near what it was a few cycles ago, and one way to ensure it doesn't become a situation where Florida has to stockpile seven signees along the line in one cycle, is to continue to bring in quality and quality. Florida is returning 14 linemen for 2020 as it is. Two or three in this class should be sufficient and the Gators are still very much in the picture for a ton of top tier linemen. While I don't feel as strongly about Issiah Walker or Jovens Janvier as I did a month ago, I'm leaving them be for now. New names to keep an eye on include Gerald Mincey and Richie Leonard.
Is it at all concerning that we look to have another OL class without any elite prospects? We have some good prospects, but none that I would consider "elite" on the level of a potential first year starter potential, which is probably something we are going to need next year.

Both of Florida's commits, Dexter (FSU) and Johnnie Brown (Alabama) will be on the road visiting elsewhere this weekend. Jaquelin Roy was on campus last weekend and Warren Brinson for Jr. Day, but at a position where Florida simply cannot afford to strikeout this cycle, the Gators should be putting a full court press on those kids nearest to the Ville in Florida and South Georgia. After visiting a couple of weeks ago, the Gators need to get Tim Smith on campus again soon as well as Jalen Carter.
Have either Dexter or Brown been on campus since the new DL Coach was hired?

If we lose Dexter I will have a mini heart attack.

Our coaches need to tell him that if you are taking all these other visits we will be recruiting other DL to take your place in case.

Texas doesn't allow their committed recruits to take other visits. We need to let ours know that we don't want them going anywhere else.

I still have Dexter in the mock class, I just took him off of the Solid as a Rock designation because of all of the visits.

As for telling a kid not to take visits, that doesn't work for the very top kids or the ones you really need. What if they call your bluff?

Plus, while it is a given that UF doesn't want their top commits taking other visits because anything could happen, I would bet that they don't sweat it out as much as the fans. They have a much better feel for where they truly stand.

By the time the Class of 2020 kids come in, Florida could be without Franks and/or Trask. What if Trask transfers and then Franks comes out after a big year? They want two quarterbacks because they were willing to take Beck and Richardson. Now, that doesn't mean you take the second one just to take one, but if they can get the right two, they will.

Rivers could be a potential first year starter at guard for an SEC team. Mullen and Company have done well to date, but though they have been in on a couple, they haven't gotten the very elite kids yet.

Today, Mullen was asked about not having a consensus five star on the roster for the first time in forever. His reply was about Prescott and Fitzgerald. Players who definitely overplayed their rankings, but the truth is, players who didn't take MSU to the next level. If you are going to beat the Bama's and Georgia's of the world, you have to have at least somewhat comparable talent. UF does need to start getting their fair share of five-stars.

I don't believe either defensive line commit has visited since Turner came on board. We'll see if they make the spring game.

Somehow it works for Dabo at Clemson, wish I knew his secret.

That's my biggest question for the staff. We have an offensive-minded genius as a coach we should not be getting beat out for a top-tier quarterback from Florida by Georgia. I don't think we should be getting beat up with any quarterback what's the history that Dan Mullen has with quarterbacks. Let alone quarterbacks from Florida. And that goes for a lot of the offensive Talent you have got to hang your hat on the offensive guys that you want.

You mention that as if Mullen had a choice. The kid trolled us while waiting for a UGA offer. Which is what he wanted all along. He didn't want to come here. Not sure how you can pin that on Mullen.

Straw man logic is killing the perception of our staff

You're missing the point... What I'm saying is our staff should have that influence on a quarterback to where he would troll Georgia and come to us... Mullen's calling card is transforming quarterbacks and producing prolific offenses. If there is an offensive guy that we are lock in on we shouldn't fear when he goes to Georgia for a visit. We are damn near terrified when they do. What I'm saying is Mullen has to have that kind of influence on somebody that he really wants. Especially if they are an offensive player.

If I am the head of Microsoft and there is an up and coming new tech and I want to hire him... I shouldn't lose that prospect to a construction company...

I'm not complaining at all I love what our staff has done.. BUT THEY HAVE TO ESTABLISH THEIR INFLUENCE ON THE TOP OFFENSIVE TALENT.. especially in Florida
