Post-Season Hot11: Top Florida performers

December 3, 2018
777

WEDNESDAY IS THE LAST DAY:
Go monthly with our $1.00 Sneak Peak
Inaugural Season Annual Special for $49.95

Inside the Gators staff members Kassidy Hill and Mark Wheeler are joined by former Florida offensive lineman Shannon Snell and former Florida defensive end Johnie Church to vote on the Gators Florida football top 11 performers at the end of the 2018 regular season.

Only 17 players (down from 21 at the mid-way point) total received votes across the four ballots. Seven players were named on all four ballots.

-----

-----

Note: Players are ranked by number of votes, but number of ballots was factored in as well, so that one person's vote couldn't overly inflate the value of a player. That is why you see Tommy Townsend (three ballots) ranked ahead of Vosean Joseph (two ballots). A player listed on more ballots got precedence over a player listed on less ballots even if they had an equal number of total points.

PLAYER POS VOTES COMMENT
Jachai Polite

DE 37 (4) After disappearing somewhat during the two game Georgia-Missouri stretch, Polite rebounded to close otu the season with a bang. A double-digit sack season has him pegged as a first round draft choice this year
C.J. Henderson

CB 34 (4) Forget his cover ability, his all out hustle saved Florida several times this season when he came across from the opposite side of the field to make plays. He was the one indispensable player on the squad. Without him, Florida isn't in the Peach Bowl
Chauncey Gardner-Johnson

DB 32 (4) CGJ deserves all the credit in the world after rebounding from a poor 2017 campaign. He has improved in all areas of the game, his tackling in particular. He is a much better cover man than he is given credit for
Lamical Perine

RB 27.5 (4) Before the season, based on his perceived lack of breakaway speed, many were wondering if he would fall down the depth chart, certainly behind Malik Davis. In the end, he was Florida’s most consistent offensive weapon this year
Van Jefferson

WR 27 (4) Feleipe Franks favorite target isn’t perhaps as explosive as you would like, but he is a near perfectionist when it comes to route running and has better than average hands
Feleipe Franks

QB 23 (4) What can be said about perhaps the most polarizing Florida quarterback in the last decade? He still isn't anywhere near a finished product, and has plenty to improve upon, but he was much improved upon in an offensive setting which didn't call on him to carry the team
Jabari Zuniga

DL 21 (4) He didn’t make the splash that Jachai Polite made this year, but he may be an all around better player. He isn't that explosive, but he can get to the quarterback and is Florida’s best defensive end defending the run
Jordan Scarlett

RB 15.5 (3) He returned from his year long suspension to carry the running game in the first half of the season before giving way somewhat to Lamical Perine late. He isn’t a breakaway threat, but he can get the tough yards between the tackles
Tommy Townsend

P 12 (3) You don’t expect to see a punter regarded so highly on a team with a top 50 type of offense, but Townsend kept opponents pinned down when Florida needed it most
Vosean Joseph

LB 12 (2) Perhaps the biggest enigma on the team. He all but single handily won the LSU game with big play after big play, but got caught out of position or playing out of control way too often. If he could harness his aggression, he would be an All SEC type of linebacker
C’Yontai Lewis

TE 5 (2) You might not see his name appear all that often on the stat sheet, but when there was a big run, chances are he helped create the hole. Never much of a pass-catcher throughout his Gators career, he had a few catches in the last two games

Others who received votes: Martez Ivey 2 (2 ballots), Jawaan Taylor 7 (1), Kadarius Toney 4 (1), Tyler Jordan 2 (1), Trevon Grimes 1 (1), David Reese II 1 (1)

Notable:

  • What if I would have told you before the season that Florida was going to a NY6 Bowl and that CeCe Jefferson wouldn’t receive a single vote in the Hot11?
  • After appearing on just one of four ballots in the mid-season edition, C.J. Henderson was on all four ballots this time around.
  • Only one offensive lineman received votes (Jawaan Taylor) received votes in the mid-season edition, this time around three lineman received attention.
  • Jachai Polite received two first place votes (Snell and Wheeler), Van Jefferson received one (Hill) and C.J. Henderson received the other (Church).

SHANNON SNELL BALLOT

# Player Comment
1 Jachai Polite

He is probably the MVP of the team in my opinion. Explosion off the ball, gave a lot of offensive tackles fits. He personally changed opposing team game plans.

2 Jordan Scarlett/Lamical Perine

One ball, two bulls. If you could manage to stop one, the other would rip you apart.

3 Chauncey Gardner-Johnson

He got better as each game went by. He is a much better tackler than most people gave him credit for. Tough as hell too.

4 Feleipe Franks

Yes, he had a very good season. No, not everything was perfect, but he played above expectations, especially when you consider he is just a sophomore.

5 Jawaan Taylor

He was the most consistent player this year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go pro. He was that good.

6 Van Jefferson

Both he and Trevon Grimes gave us a taste of what could be moving forward.

7 Tommy Townsend

Yep. A punter. His ability to flip field and hang punts gave the defense a unique advantage.

8 C.J. Henderson

Henderson is going to get a lot more action next year due to the fact that most teams would not throw his way. Once Marco Wilson comes back from injury, CJ’s stats will match his incredible play this past season.

9 Vosean Joseph

Joseph had flashes of dominance. If he can put together a full campaign, look out.

10 Jabari Zuniga

An underrated pass rusher. Zuniga doesn’t get the respect he deserves.

11 Martez Ivey

He faced some pretty good pass rushers and did well. I didn’t hear his name a lot during the 2nd half of the season and he was a big reason Franks stayed relatively clean most of the time. Very tough run blocker.

JOHNIE CHURCH BALLOT

# Player Comment
1 C.J. Henderson

This kid would be a top 10 pick if he could come out this year. He routinely shut down half of the field in most games, and that allowed us to compensate for the lack of experienced depth in the rest of the secondary all season long. His never quit mentality has literally saved numerous touchdowns and a few losses. This is our team MVP in my opinion!

2 Jachai Polite

There's four or five games where he was unblockable in the passing game. You can't teach what he naturally has as a bender and explosive player with very little wasted movements.

3 Vosean Joseph

There were three or four games this season where he was the best defensive player on the field. He still needs to find those ebbs & flows to keep consistency; but his energy, athleticism, and aggressiveness is perfect for a linebacker.

4 Jabari Zuniga

Jizz (sound his initials make) has been a steady force for three seasons now. He just creates space for others and gets the job done. A lot!

5 Feleipe Franks

As a quarterback who has large swings in level of play, he continued to compete and help with some big wins for the Orange and Blue this season.

6 Chauncey Gardner-Johnson

He continued to show range and flexibility in his abilities. He's played corner, safety, nickel, and even a hybrid linebacker at times. He's done everything the coaching staff has asked of him during his time in Gainesville!

7 Lamical Perine

He proved that he's more than capable of handling the load and co-piloting the fleet.

8 Jordan Scarlett

Scarlett came back and continued to prove he's a tough-nosed, hard-running, running back that helped lead a power run game.

9 C’Yontai Lewis

The senior quietly played a major role in getting our running game going off-tackle and on the edges. He dominated as a blocker this year and showed that he can be a complete tight end. I think Dan Mullen molding him into a serviceable blocker has given him an opportunity to get drafted in the later rounds.

10 Van Jefferson

He became a very reliable, go-to guy for the offense and looks to be a class-act.

11 David Reese II

The veteran player provided immediate stability and toughness to a previously struggling group after returning from injury.
