Instant Analysis: Sooners outlast Gators in Atlantis

Nov 21, 2018 | 0 comments

The Florida Gators (2-2) dropped their first game in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament against the Oklahoma Sooners (4-0) 65-60. The game came down to the wire, but Florida was unable to top the Sooners.

Instant Analysis takes a quick look at the game.

WHAT WENT WRONG: The Gators didn’t play a full 40 minutes and it cost them. Four games in and Florida was still unable to put together an all-around consistent effort once again this season. The game was very much back-and-forth and the Gators had their chances to take the lead but couldn’t muster enough to top the Sooners.

WHO STOLE THE SHOW: Oklahoma's Christian James entered the game as the Sooners leading scorer, averaging 22.7 a game and he certainly disappoint. James finished with 18 points, which he scored 10 of those in the first half.

Also for the Sooners, Jamuni McNeace was a force. McNeace was all over the court on both sides of the ball. McNeace finished with 11 points and 6 rebounds, along with 4 blocked shots.

As for the Gators, Dontay Bassett turned in a great effort off the bench. Bassett entered the game with zero points on the season, but scored 14 points Wednesday. Bassett also showed that he can stretch the floor on offense, making two 3-pointers.

THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE: The Gators came to Atlantis struggling offensively, especially from beyond the 3-point-line. The Gators were able to shoot the ball well from deep in the first half, going 6-of-11. A sign for concern in the first half for the Gators is that they only went 5-of-15 from inside the 3-point line.

The Gators shot better from deep, but still weren’t a consistent enough effort to get the win. Florida finished the game shooting 39% from both the field and from 3-point-range.

BOTTOM LINE: The Gators lack of size continues to cost them on the glass, as the Sooners heavily ou trebounded the Gators. The Gators simply gave the Sooners too many second chances to score and they took advantage. The Gators were out rebounded 48-34, allowing 15 Sooners offensive rebounds.

Florida isn’t going to get any bigger until Gorjok Gak comes back from injury, so the Gators need to come up with a way to limit opposing teams second-chance opportunities.

UP NEXT: Florida will face the loser of today’s game between the No. 25 Wisconsin Badgers (3-0) and the Stanford Cardinal (2-1). Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Thursday night.
