Instant Analysis: Florida with a runaway victory behind dominant second half

Nov 9, 2018 | 0 comments

The Florida Gators (1-1) were able to pick up their first victory of the 2018 season by beating the Charleston Southern Buccaneers 76-46 Friday night. The Gators were able to get the bitter taste left in their mouths from Tuesday’s season opening loss to Florida State, while putting on a show in front of their home crowd.

WHAT WENT RIGHT: The Gators were suffocating on defensive side of the ball Friday night, holding the Buccaneers to just a 25% from the field. The Gators length and athleticism on the defense side of the ball was too much for Charleston Southern to overcome. The Gators held the Buccaneers scoreless for the first seven minutes of the second half

On offense, the Gators were far more efficient Friday night. The Gators finished shooting 46% from the field. The Gators started slow shooting three-pointers early, but a strong second-half shooting performance finished the Gators with eight three-pointers.

HE STOLE THE SHOW: After being held scoreless in the opener against FSU, KeVaughn Allen found his stride again, scoring 14 points. Allen poured in 11 of the points in a stellar first-half performance on both sides of the ball. Allen was relentless on defense, having 5 steals.

Deaundrae Ballard had another stellar performance to start the season. Scoring 13 in the opener, Ballard scored 12 Friday night and was second in scoring for the Gators behind Allen.

THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE: The Gators stymied the Buccaneers defensively, turning in a performance that will please head coach Mike White. White and the Gators pride themselves in playing defense and they will need more performances like tonight throughout the course of the season. As a team, the Gators finished with 12 steals, five blocks and forced 19 turnovers.

BOTTOM LINE: The Gators showed what their capable of Friday night, but now it comes down to being consistent. A year ago, that was a big knock on the Gators, as the season was filled with ups-and-downs. Now in a new year, it will be important for the Gators to maintain a consistent level of play.

UP NEXT: The Gators will look to ride some momentum from Friday night’s victory to a win-streak, as the Gators next will host the La Salle Explorers on 11/14 at 7 p.m.
