In-state receiver remains interested in Florida

Lake City (Fla.) borderline four-star wide out TJ Jones‍ is one of the best receivers in the North Central Florida area. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound receiver has exemplified tremendous talent during his senior campaign at Columbia High School.

The local receiver has previously shown interest in Florida, interest that at one  time went both ways, and continues to display his interest despite communication slipping between Jones and the Gators' coaching staff.

“I haven’t really been hearing back from them lately,” Jones said. “They haven’t told me anything. It’ just… the phone works two ways. I probably need to reach out more to them and really let them know I’m still interested in Florida.”

However, the circumstances were different earlier during the 2018 calendar year with Florida exhibiting that same interest towards Jones. He discussed with InsideTheGators his previous communication with the staff.

“Around the springtime, I was talking to them almost every day,” Jones said of his prior contact with Florida. “We were just texting. They were telling me that I can be a Florida Gators and they love the way I play.”

A major reason outside of the athletic side of his recruitment, Jones’ interest in Florida includes the proximity to home.

“I like Florida because I like what they’re doing,” Jones said. “For one, they’re in the SEC. Two, they’re like 45 minutes away from home, so I can play big-time football and still be close to home.”

As signing day approaches, Jones is eyeing five major schools: Florida, Miami, Nebraska, Louisville, and Tennessee. His main objective during this time is to figure out which school will provide him with an opportunity to play.

“I’m just looking forward to them showing me where I would be used at,” Jones said. “But I don’t want to redshirt, so I want them to let me know and be honest with me.”

Jones later added his announcement will come in February and is looking to build a connection with the school he chooses.

“Just somewhere where the coaches are real,” Jones said of what he wants in a school. “I can build a bond with the coaches and get to know them better. Talk to them and communicate with them.”

THE INSIDE SCOOP: Though Jones is havnig a terrific senior season (32 catches for 582-yards 18.2 YPC avg.) but with commitments already from Dionte Marks‍ and Ja'Markis Weston‍, Florida is likely all in on Elijah Higgins‍ at this point. If Florida lands him, then that is likely the end of recruiting at the position. If not, then you could see interest pick up on a prospect such as Jones.
