According to a report from The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, Florida is hiring former Gators’ great, linebacker Mike Peterson as Billy Napier’s outside linebackers coach and an alumni liaison.

One of the more recognizable defenders and fan favorites from the Steve Spurrier era, the former first-team All-American is someone a segment of the fan base hoped to return to Gainesville as a coach.

He spent some time on the strength and conditioning staff during Will Muschamp’s tenure from 2013 to 2015.

A second-round draft choice by the Indianapolis Colts in 1999, the UF Athletic Hall of Famer will bring a decade’s worth of NFL experience to the program. That is something that could be beneficial to current players and appeal to future Gators’ targets as well.

Muschamp hired Peterson to coach outside linebackers in 2016 and he stayed on through the 2021 season. The Gamecocks website listed him as both an OLB and defensive ends coach for Shane Beamer. He coached players like Darius English and DJ Wonnum to second-team All-SEC recognitions. Wonnum ended up going in the fourth round to the Minnesota Vikings in 2020.

More recently, Kingsley Enagbare earned first-team All-SEC in 2020 under Peterson with 30 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and six sacks plus three forced fumbles. While his sack and TFL numbers dipped, Enagbare upped his total tackles and quarterback hurries in 2021.
