At the moment, Florida and Notre Dame have at least two things in common: they each have had to replace their head football coach in the last two weeks and they are the two finalists for Naples (Fla.) four-star defensive back Devin Moore.
“I'll be deciding between them [Florida] and Notre Dame,” Moore said Sunday afternoon while leaving his official visit to Gainesville.
While Moore had already been to campus multiple times and had built relationships with the previous staff, he was breaking new ground over the weekend, just now getting to know these new coaches.
"It was great. Just got to see everybody again, meet the new coaching staff, give my family the full aspect of what Florida has to offer. So, yeah, it was good."
However, unlike most of the remaining positions on the team, there was no need to try to paint a picture for Moore explaining what might be and who could be hired. Florida has its defensive backfield coaching staff in place with Patrick Toney being announced as the co-Defensive Coordinator and safeties coach just days before Florida lured Corey Raymond away from LSU.
"Coach Toney, my first time meeting him was last week and I never met coach Raymond, so seeing him and putting a phone call to a face was very important,” said Moore. “Just talking ball with him was very nice, very fun.”
While Florida's newly hired staff is trying to develop a relationship with Moore, Notre Dame's decision to promote defensive coordinator Mike Freeman to head coach helped them in the eyes of Moore.
“It was great," replied Moore when asked about the Irish making Freeman their new head coach. "I really like [Coach] Freeman, I have a great relationship with him, very strong because I've been talking to him for going on two years now. It meant a lot for him to be hired as the head coach, from being defensive coordinator. I really like that move."
Moore said that he will announce his decision sometime between 7-8 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
When he does, he said it will come down to a gut feeling.
“It's just which place I feel is the better fit for me,” said Moore. “Both are tremendous universities with plenty to offer and great football teams. It's just what me and my family think is a better fit for us.”
The Inside Scoop: If the Irish hadn’t hired Freeman, this might already be a slam dunk for Florida. As it is, it’s probably still close, maybe even too close to call, but you have to think that the Gators have the momentum going into the last couple of days.
