The Foundation of Florida Football

One of the reasons, if not the main reason, Dan Mullen is no longer the head coach of the Florida Gators was his lack of success along the recruiting trail. However, although UF is nowhere near as talented as Alabama or Georgia, he didn't leave the cupboard completely bare.

Here are 15 Florida players with two or more years of eligibility remaining that should serve as the foundation of Billy Napier's squad over the next two seasons.

  • Running Back Demarckus Bowman

His speed lends itself to plenty of big-play ability. He can be a game-breaker in Napier's rush attack. And limited playing time ensures he has fresh legs and should be around for multiple years.

  • Offensive Lineman Josh Braun

He started the season as the sixth man along the line, but then stepped in and filled a starting void at right guard when Ethan White went out. He's a mauler and will be key in the ground game.

  • Defensive Lineman Gervon Dexter

If he has a monster 2022, Napier will only have the Lake Wales product for a year. He's already taken a step forward, another one and he'll be a true problem for every offense.

  • Center Kingsley Eguakun

After being a standout during fall camp, he had a solid start to the season before taking a step back with his struggles at Kentucky and dealing with injuries for part of the year. But anyone who can hold their own in the SEC at center as a redshirt sophomore must have value.

  • Athlete Fenley Graham

One of the bigger questions marks surrounding the 2021 edition of Florida football was with all of the struggles in the return game, why wasn’t this elite return man in high school at least given some sort of opportunity to show what he can do? The tape screams for more utilization. Plus could put himself in the mix for some run at safety.

  • Linebacker Ty'Ron Hopper

Showed some flashes at inside backer, especially that double-digit solo tackle game against Missouri.

  • Cornerback Jason Marshall

Came in as a true freshman and pushed for a starting spot even before injuries forced him into the lineup. He has all the makings of adding to a long line of elite Florida corners.

  • Safety Donovan McMillon

Physical, athletic, and aggressive safety. Could shape into a guy who flies around and makes plays.

  • Quarterback Anthony Richardson

Playmaker. Period. Still learning but possesses great arm strength and everyone knows his running ability. He's made some NFL throws this season alone.

  • Safety Rashad Torrence

He was the second-leading tackler and led the Gators in interceptions in 2021. The young man is coming into his own.

  • Defensive End Princely Umanmielen

Recorded 1.5 sacks through the first four games as a reserve defensive lineman, but didn't post much after probably due to a reduced role. However, he's got the makings of a good edge player with a natural burst that gives him an opportunity to live in an opponent’s backfield.

  • Defensive Lineman Desmond Watson

The kid is basically a bear. In both size and swiftness of movement. Showed good flashes. The freshman has the potential to be molded into a quality nose guard if the new strength and conditioning staff can continue to build on what Nick Savage and Company started.

  • Linebacker Scooby Williams

He was the fourth-best prospect in the state of Alabama out of high school but only played sparingly in 2021. You can see that he has the tools to be a difference-maker when he gets his opportunity.

  • Linebacker Derek Wingo

He saw increased playing time when Christian Robinson took over for Todd Grantham and responded by having his three best games down the stretch – recording five of his nine tackles, his only tackle for loss, and his only pass breakup in the last three games of the season.

  • Receiver Trent Whittemore

He has the makings of being a solid receiver, especially in a possession role. Plus, he blocks his tail off on the outside. Those will be huge.
