Getting to Know: Defensive Line Signee Desmond Watson

Jan 13, 2021 | 0 comments

Desmond Watson‍’s commitment to Florida helped the Gators on multiple fronts, including adding a much needed big body along the defensive line, as well as helping UF to reestablish a pipeline to Seffner (Fla.) Armwood High School, one of the biggest talent producing schools in the state.

On top of his physical dominance and intangibles, Watson should also prove to be a nice, interesting voice in Florida’s locker room. Inside the Gators got an inside look at the great person Watson is in this edition of Getting to Know.

Take us through the process of your commitment?
”It was really hard. I had Texas A&M and Florida, those were my top two. I couldn’t choose at all. I was looking for an edge every day for which one I should go to. I finally decided Florida was the place for me.”

Why did Texas A&M come in second place?
“Coach [Elijah] Robinson, the defensive line coach, he always kept it real and he was one of my favorite coaches throughout the recruiting process. Also, I was an FSU fan growing up and Jimbo Fisher is the coach there, so getting to work with him. And I visited it and it was really nice.

What would you say are some of your greatest strengths as a football player?
”I feel like I got the speed and quickness. Nobody can move the way I can do. I’m strong. Like everyone’s strong, but not like me. So, I would say my quickness, my strength, and especially my size.

[Aside: Watson is listed at 6-foot-5, 380-pounds, but on Early Signing Day Dan Mullen said that he would likely report above 400-pounds]

Who is the prospect that you have talked to the most from your class?
Kamar [Wilcoxson], Donovan [McMillon], Jason [Marshall], Corey [Collier], Daejon [Reynolds] and Dakota [Mitchell]. That’s who comes to mind.”

What would be your first purchase if you got drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft?
”A car for my mom and a car for my dad. I’m not really into material stuff, so I would want to get my parents something.”

What is one item that you cannot live without it?
“Probably my phone and my game. I use my game to keep my mind off certain stuff, so I use it a lot.”

Who has been the biggest role model for you in your life?
“Probably my little brother. He’s my biggest motivation, and the reason is that when he was five, he used to play football and he had a stroke and they didn’t know if he was going to live or not. So, if he can make it through that, I know I can make it to the NFL and make everything good for my whole family.”

What are your favorite types of music? Do you have a favorite artist or song?
“I probably listen to R&B the most. I don’t really have a favorite artist though.”

What is your favorite movie?
”One of the Friday movies, and Coming to America.”

If you could meet one person in the world, who would that be?
“LeBron James or Cameron Hayward, my favorite defensive tackle.”

If you a chance to go on a dream date, who would it be with?
“My girlfriend.”

Where do you see yourself five years from now?
”In the NFL.”

What are three things on your bucket list?
”Travel somewhere tropical.”
”Play in the NFL, for sure.”
”I don’t really have a third one.”

What is one thing about you that the Gator Nation would be surprised to find out about?
”I like to sing.”
