When linebacker Chief Borders‍ announced that he was going to make a final decision before shutting down his recruitment for good, many believed the excellent student was going to de-commit from Florida and take his talents to Stanford. Instead, Borders faked out, re-affirming his commitment to the Gators. He plans to early enroll.

All Florida fans know Borders is a top student and a top athlete, but Inside the Gators got an inside look at his recruitment and engaging personality in this edition of Getting to Know.

FOOTBALL/RECRUITING

Take us through the process that led to your commitment. What was that experience like for you?
“It was crazy. I’ve known Coach [Dan] Mullen since 8th or 9th grade, when he was still at Mississippi State. He always said I was going to play for him and that carried on. And now, here I am a Florida Gator.”

Which school came in second for you?
“You always want to be around the team and the staff and know what to expect. I never had a chance to visit Stanford’s campus. The virtual visit only covers a certain segment. They’re only going to show you what you want to see. I chose Florida because I knew what to expect.”

Do you have an interesting story about Dan Mullen that you can tell me?
“When I first visited Florida, I was coming from a 7-on-7 tournament, and we stopped on the way back to visit the campus. We got a little tour of everything, even the hospital, Shands, and all of the football facilities. So, Coach Mullen made the whole 7-on-7 team wait like two extra hours because he was talking to me and my family. Literally like two hours just to talk to us. It was crazy.”

What would you say are some of your greatest strengths as a football player?
”My biggest strength is my versatility. I play sideline to sideline, and I don’t get tired. The energy I bring is fun. I don’t play with pressure. I do my thing. I’m a hard hitter and a playmaker.”

Who is the prospect that you have talked to the most from the Class of 2021?
”Mostly Donovan McMillon and Dakota Mitchell. I also talk to Corey Collier, Jason Marshall, really everyone. I keep in touch with all my brothers. My bro Scooby [Jeremiah Williams], here and there. I try to make sure everyone is on their Ps and Qs. We all have fun and get along before even getting on campus, but when it’s time to go to work, it’s time to go to work.”

PERSONAL

What would be your first purchase if you got drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft?
”I’ll probably invest in the stock market, no cap.”

What is one item that you cannot live without it? Why?
”Probably my phone. It’s how you do everything on a daily basis.”

Who has been the biggest role model for you in your life? Why?
”Definitely my dad. He’s the reason why I am the young man I am today. He’s pushed me and seen things in me I haven’t seen in myself. He always made sure we grind every day. Now that I’m older, I’m making sure we grind every day. It’s funny how things change sometimes.”

What are your favorite types of music? Do you have a favorite artist or song?
”Lil’ Wayne hands down. But my favorite music is hip/hop and R&B.”

What is your favorite movie?
”The Sandlot or Wreck-It Ralph.”

If you could meet one person in the world, who would that be?
Michael Jordan. It’s coming soon.”

If you a chance to go on a dream date, who would it be with?
”My girlfriend, De’mauri Flournoy. She’s committed to Vanderbilt basketball.”

Where do you see yourself five years from now?
”Definitely finishing up my master’s degree. I want to get my master’s, and then enter the draft.”

What are three things on your bucket list?
“I want to go skydiving.”
”I want to buy my dream car, a Bugatti.”
”I want to make sure I accomplish all my financial goals.”

What is one thing about you that the Gator Nation would be surprised to find out about?
”I eat really slowly. Like really slowly.”
