When Nick Elksnis de-committed from Penn State, Florida fans were excited about the prospect of landing the 6-foot-6, 220-pound tight end from Jacksonville. Less than a week later, Elksnis gave his word to the Gators and never wavered. Now, all signed to the orange and blue, Elksnis is excited to get to Gainesville as an early enrollee.
Inside the Gators gives you an inside look at Nick Elksnis the football player and Nick Elksnis the person in this edition of Getting to Know.
Take us through the process that led to your commitment. What was that experience like for you?
“Mine was as similar as anyone else’s, but also different because my family has never been through anything like the recruiting process. My high school is not very widely known for athletics, so I was staying back and letting schools come to me. I wasn’t really into getting my name out there. I was definitely one of the quieter recruits, not posting on social media or talking to recruiting services. It was really interesting getting to know coaches and meeting all different kinds of people.”
Which school came in second for you and why?
”To be honest, I don’t think I have a second. After I de-committed from Penn State, Florida was so obviously the first option that there was no second or third option for me. There wasn’t anywhere else that I wanted to go. I told services I was looking just so they thought I was looking. I knew I wanted to go to Florida.”
Do you have an interesting story about Dan Mullen that you can tell me?
“My family was actually talking about this when I signed. The first year that Mullen did his Gator Booster Club thing in Jacksonville, my grandma went when I was in 9th grade. When they got to the Q&A session, my outgoing grandmother raised her hand and said “I just wanted you to know that my grandson is a tight end, and you guys need to go look at him.” Flash forward 2-3 years, and here I am playing for Mullen.”
What would you say are some of your greatest strengths as a football player?
“I would say my strengths are my size and athleticism, and the fact that I have a really good work ethic, I believe. I’m the kind of person who won’t be outworked by the person next to me. I’m the kind of person who gives it all I’ve got every game, every play, and every snap.”
Who is the prospect that you have talked to the most from the Class of 2020?
“I’ve talked a lot with Gage Wilcox, the other tight end, just because I got to know him well through my time as a recruit. I met him the summer before 10th grade, and we kept up, and now we’re going to be playing together.”

What would be your first purchase if you were drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft?
"I would probably buy myself a new truck, that’s my first thing. I would probably get a Ford F-250 and make it look really nice."
Who has been the biggest role model for you in your life? Why?
"I would say my dad, just because I’ve watched how he works and his work ethic and the way that he treats people. All different facets. He’s one of those people you look up to. Without even trying, he attracts people to watch him and act like he acts. Just because of how he carries himself. Everything about it."
What are your favorite types of music? Do you have a favorite artist or song?
"This might be a little bit different from what you’re used to hearing, but I’m a really big country fan, and a fan of old 70s and 80s music. Classic rock like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Waylon Jennings, all those people."
What is your favorite movie?
"I would say my favorite movie is True Grit. Both versions."
What is your favorite TV show?
"Probably Deadliest Catch."
If you a chance to go on a dream date, who would it be with?
"I would say either Victoria’s Secret model Romee Strijd or Blake Lively."
If you could meet one person in the world, who would that be?
"I’d like to meet Stone Cold Steve Austin from the WWE. My dad was a pretty big fan of his, and I became a big fan because of that."
Where do you see yourself five years from now?
"I see myself still playing football. By that time, God willing, I’m in the NFL doing what I love and loving what I do."
What are three things on your bucket list?
"I want to travel to New Zealand and go hunting out there."
"I want to drive either an F1 car or a NASCAR stock car."
"I want to learn how to fly a plane."
What is one thing about you that the Gator Nation would be surprised to find out about?
"I’m a pretty big outdoors guy. I love hunting and fishing, and I’d rather spend my time in the woods than in the city."
