FLORIDA FOOTBALL & RECRUITING COVERAGE
Orlando (Fla.) Edgewater wide receiver Christian Leary is taking his time to ensure he makes the right decision for his college career.
The four-star speedster was originally set to make his commitment June 6th but recently announced he would be pushing back the date.
He told Inside the Gators he planned to commit on that date in honor of his mom’s birthday, but when he didn’t feel ready to make a pledge, he deferred to his mom’s advice.
“My mom told me don’t rush it,” he said. “She thought I was trying to do it for her.”
Along those lines, there is still more that he needs to say. Leary recently took a virtual visit to Florida and left with nothing but positive thoughts about the school.
“I loved it,” he said. “Coach [Billy] Gonzales (his host) introduced what we were gonna do like living and food, and we talked about life after football and academics. I really liked the sports science because of the way they train with speedy guys me. We also talked about food, which was good, cause you know I love to eat, and the way they work the offense.”
Leary said he is not focused on further chopping down his list from a top six. However, he commented on each of his six finalists..
Florida – “I’ve been loving Florida way before I got the offer. It’s not too close to home, but it’s not too far, which I really like. It doesn’t feel like I’m in Orlando, but it’s still close. It’s the only school in Florida that I like, really. The way they work the offense [at Florida] is amazing, and they told me I can run track there. I talked to Coach [Mike] Holloway on the virtual visit too.”
Ohio State – “I’ve been wanting to go to Ohio State since before I was in high school. The coaches are really making me a priority; Ohio State is getting stronger by the day.”
Alabama – “I like Coach [Nick] Saban. All the coaches keep it real, but he tells me what I need to hear instead of what I want to hear. Alabama’s program always gonna be Alabama’s program under him. I’m also taking notes. Jaylen Waddle is going to be out of there soon, and they’re going to need a slot guy.”
Auburn – “I love Coach [Gus] Malzahn. I can talk to him any time of the day about anything. When I went up there, they showed me love and I can definitely see myself up there.”
Oklahoma – “I love Coach [Lincoln] Riley, and I love [wide receivers coach] Coach Gundy. The coaches bring the same good energy every time they talk to me.”
West Virginia – “They were one of the first couple schools to offer me. Coach Scott always showed love to me. I always got that feeling with West Virginia.”
When asked if he had anything else he wanted to add, he responded that he wanted to let everyone know his favorite color is purple.
Leary is the No. 138 rated prospect in the nation according to the 247 Sports Composite.
