Patrick Toney, @GatorsFB's co-DC and play-caller last season, is in negotiations to join the NFL's Arizona Cardinals as a defensive assistant, sources tell ESPN, and Florida's Billy Napier is targeting newly hired @AlabamaFTBL assistant Austin Armstrong as Toney's replacement.

That’s kind of wild. He’s making a million a year here. He being pushed out or leaving on his own?

Best news since the season ended.

Patrick Toney is a good coach. He’s going to be a good HC someday. All the whining about him is sort of a joke.

SOURCE: Florida DC Patrick Toney is leaving UF to join Jonathan Gannon’s staff with the Arizona Cardinals. The 32-year old Toney is regarded by many coaches as one of the game’s sharper young defensive minds. ESPN first reported the move. https://t.co/FhYH6SaAGf

It is kind of strange.
I wonder how many Power Five DC leave for the NFL for a lesser position, in this case an analyst?
I can believe that Napier is correct and that the NFL was Toney’s goal, and maybe this is his way of getting his foot in the door, so to say.
But I would think once you get to the level of DC in the SEC, you would prove yourself and then move to DC or at worse position coach in the NFL – think Dan Quinn – but then I could be wrong.
Maybe Toney saw how bad the culture was at Florida and didn’t want to stick around for the rebuild?
Maybe the pressure at Florida was too much?
It just seems to me an unusual move.
