Impact Analysis: Prospects committing elsewhere (AKA the Florida Fear Factor)

Nothing in recruiting takes place within a bubble. When prospects associated with your program, regardless of where they appear on your board, commit elsewhere, it impacts your board.

Normally the first reaction from a fan when they see a prospect who is associated with their school commit elsewhere is a sense of fear. That a player that they wanted was taken by another school, perhaps even a rival.

Now and then we'll take a look at how prospects committing to other programs impacts Florida and put a 'Fear Factor' grade on it as to how it impacts the Gators.

1 - who cares
10 - what the hell happened

* Wide Receiver Frank Ladson (Clemson)
This one time Florida commit may be the best overall prospect of those who decided to open back up their recruiting process with the coaching change at Florida. For the Gators though, this is a mixed bag. After visiting UF a couple of weeks ago, it felt like Florida was getting back in it. So, his commitment does sting, but if you are Florida, it's better he committed to Clemson rather than Miami, where he seemed to be leaning. If he went there, he may have had some coattails in that other south Florida targets may have followed.

* Quarterback Taisun Phommachanh (Clemson)
He looks like the perfect fit for the Florida offense and he did have some good things to say about the Gators after visiting, but UF was never thought to be a favorite here and when Florida landed Jalon Jones it all but shut the door on any other quarterback in this class unless one of Florida's current quarterbacks decides to transfer out.

* Linebacker Jaleel McRae (FSU)
Yes he was at one time committed to Florida, but even then you had to wonder what the thought process was for the Gators to accept a commitment so early from a prospect who has already had two knee surgeries in high school. The new staff hadn't offered him, or to be honest, when he visited with the IMG Academy bus tour, even seemed to show him much interest. This is a positive and a negative for Florida. Florida State uses a scholarship slot on a player the Gators weren't interested in. However, it also gives FSU a voice/recruiter in the IMG lockerroom.

* Offensive lineman Dontae Lucas (FSU)
There is no soft-soaping this one, he was a top tier target that Florida legitimately had a shot at landing with both the old and new staff. As we clearly state in our write-up on him last weekend when he was in town with his IMG Academy teammates, at this time last year it was an Alabama, Florida and Miami as the favorites, but watch out for Florida State now with the relationship he has with the Seminoles staff. He dismissed that notion then, but then of course committed to FSU less then a week later.

* Wide Receiver Maurice Goolsby (FSU)
Though he was at one time committed to Florida under the previous staff, not only had the new staff not re-offered him, he told ITG at the Orlando UA Camp that the Gators weren't even in contact. He has some size, but (at that camp at least) didn't use it to his advantage and doesn't have top end speed to help him gain separation. A central Florida 7v7 coach told ITG that he has some tools, but he doesn't consistently take football as serious as he should at this point.

We need to get Lucas back to seeing the big picture. We need him and we need to get good with the IMG recruits like him.

Why didn't our new staff like Goolsby or McRae? Our other staff that bad at evaluating talent or is our new staff that bad?

McRae has already blown out both knees and has put on weight to the point he isn't the safety that he was being recruited as, but now a linebacker. It will be interesting to see how he does against IMG players in practice.

Goolsby, he just isn't what Florida is looking for in a wide out. He has some height, but that is about it. I don't like putting more stock in a camp setting in shorts and t-shirts compared to games, but I was thoroughly unimpressed at Orlando UA.

We will break it next year for sure with Griffis already committed to us.
