The second round of sec men's basketball tournament has tipped off, and today, the Gators survive to live another day beating Vanderbilt 69-63.
It's been a year to the day that the NBA cancelled their season, followed shortly by the SEC cancelling the tournament. After no 2020 was crowned, Florida has punched their ticket to the quarterfinals of this tournament.
I'm just grateful for the opportunity to play again," Tre Mann said.
Mann has been the heart of this offense the past weeks, and today was no different. He put up 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Mann has been so outstanding that the previous loss of Tennessee can be blamed on the fact that Mann was absent due to migraines.
"I just see him playing with a lot of confidence," Noah Locke said about Mann's offensive performance,
Additionally, Tyree Appleby also was effective with 12 points, and Colin Castleton's height came into play with his eight rebounds.
Florida led 34-22 going into the half. Noah Locke was dominant scoring 11 points. Their lead dwindled about halfway into the second half tied 55-55. From there, the Gators battled with the Commodores for ball possession and the lead. While the defense was shaky, head coach Mike White saw some promise.
"It wasn't great, but it was better," he said. He pushed for faster play in the offseason being quicker and more aggressive, but he wants to see the team slow down each play in their head.
Florida's defense pulled it together in the end.
"I think we did a better job contesting that three shot at the end," Mann added on the
defensive coverage. Vanderbilt's Trey Thomson dropped three straight threes in the final moments. However, the Commodores put up a fight. Scott Pippen Jr had 23 points and went 10/10 in free throws after going 9/9 in free throws against Texas A&M Wednesday. He's hard to defend and is a quick thinker. The poise that he has at the foul is threatening to any opponent. White said that Pippen reminds him a lot of Mann.
"He's playing a video game out there," White said, "he sees things before it happens."
With today's victory, Florida advances to the quarterfinals to face the No. 4 seed Tennessee. These two have played twice this season, with the Gators claiming victory in their first matchup 75-49. Although, there last outing was much closer, notably due to the absence of Mann. Tennessee took that one 65-54. The two will battle tomorrow at 2 pm looking to advance to the semifinals.
