First player up is wide receiver Justin Shorter. Asked about Emory Jones. Says all the QBs have adopted the new role where they need to step up. Mentions it's spread to other players on roster in terms of leadership.
Shorter says Emory's great at all facets. Nothing but praise for the rest of the quarterback room, mentions Anthony Richardson can do backflips. Shows how athletic they are.
Shorter on coming back from Cotton Bowl: That was last year and this is a completely different year. Everyone's committed themselves 100 percent in practice and work outs. Bowl was a disappointment but you just have to grow from it.
Shorter on being recruited by Mullen through the portal: Great coach, knows how to win. Great at developing players and will coach every player individually in practice and in the game. Mentions he's come up to Shorter and helped him with his route running.
Shorter on the WR room with all the other guy gone: It was great playing with them and those guys created a culture. The new room is just picking up where those players left off.
Shorter's thoughts on name, image, likeness: He's excited. Allows for college players to have a source of income since they can't get jobs due to football's workload. He hasn't looked into it at all. Onus will be on compliance and coaches when it comes to the ins and outs.
Shorter breaking down his last five months: Took the time to look at how they played as an offense. His answer? Work harder and work smarter. He went back to how he played in 2020 and see his small flaws to improve. Wishes he could have back a stutter go and the ball sailed over his head. His great catch against Arkansas was a play he loved. Hopes people can see 50 of those this season.
Shorter on how much the offense changing to Emory's skillset: "It changes a lot." Mentions how all the QBs they have are so athletic and the QB run will be a big part of their offense in the option game. The main goal is getting back to Atlanta though. Said he's fine with blocking.
Carter on coming back: Wasn't thinking about being a center piece when deciding to come back. He's glad to be back and he really wanted to get his degree along with leave his mark and legacy.
Carter on Shelton and Newkirk: Excited about those guys who came in. It's different coming as a senior from a whole different school and fitting in. Thinks they're in good hands.
Carter says he's never seen a kid as big as Desmond Watson. He's a big, thick kid. That's how they grow them in Tampa according to him.
The other guys try to motivate him and encourage but Watson knows what he has to do. Carter said he's going to look like a monster when he finally gets in shape.
Carter says he wants to be to the younger players what the older were to him. Also, he wants to not rely on just football. That's why he got his degree. Thinks more guys should have that attitude but people have different circumstances. Says he's a journalism major.
Carter changed his number to six. He's never had one and when asked he went "Hey why not?" Some people make Dante Fowler allusions but Carter says it's not about that. He just wanted a single digit jersey.
The main thing about the defense: Find something to improve on every day. Carter thinks they'll surprise a lot of people but the defense is about working to get better every day.
Carter on what Emory Jones brings to the offense: It's a different flavor. He's athletic and will make a guy miss. "He keeps you on your toes," he says.
Carter on playing in a more solidified position: It'll be good for him. Since he got UF he was a fill in player but this spring and moving forward he's trying to master the defensive end position.
Jones on the pressure of being the No. 1 QB: He doesn't put a lot on himself. He has a lot of responsibility and he's been waiting for it a long time. He's just glad they're having spring.
Jones said he was close with Brian Johnson. He and Mullen were the first ones who offered him. He's happy for him. But he knows Garrick McGee is capable and can do a great job.
Jones talking why it doesn't turn out good to put pressure on himself: It's not necessarily that but putting pressure on himself is just unnecessary at that point.
Jones on being in uncomfortable situations in his limited role: Mentions it's helped because he's been in every big game Florida played in like the Georgia game. Says he felt in today's practice he had a chip on shoulder but that's every day. He says he and Richardson pushes themselves but Jones cannot do a backflip.
Jones talking about sticking around: The first thing Mullen stressed to him was develop. It was definitely tough only coming for a couple plays at a time. But it made him confident. He's been working his tail off.
Jones speaking on any changes to the offense with him in: It won't change a lot. They'll still run the same thing. Right now it's about using all of their resources.
