With Florida’s 2026 season opener against Florida Atlantic just under a week away, Inside the Gators has turned to former Gators football players to get their take on the upcoming season and the state of Florida football.
We will publish the results as they are returned.
Today we have responses from players from three different decades of Florida football in fullback Chris Bilkie (96-99), defensive lineman Javier Estopinan (2004-08), linebacker (player: 1987-90 coach: 2000-02) Jerry Odom, and lineman Bobby Williams (2000-02).
What is your take on what went wrong during the Billy Napier Era?
Bilkie: I think he should get credit for creating a foundation/structure that allows Jon Sumrall to focus on building a football team. Florida was way behind the Bama’s and Georgia’s from an admin and support standpoint. Billy caught us up. But that’s where his value ran out. He failed in the weight room, the locker room, and on the sideline. I don’t feel like it was a knowledge issue but more of a personality issue. Granted, I am speaking from afar, and it may be unfair, but I felt no fire from the program, and at the very best, when we had some fire, we couldn’t sustain it week to week.
Estopinan: What went wrong: Zero development of players. Lack of accountability across the board.
Odom: Billy was a nice person. But I think to be great at Florida you have to have an edge and a toughness that never came through.
Williams: My take is that Billy Napier should have hired an offensive coordinator.
To this point, what is your opinion of Jon Sumrall?
Bilkie: I really like everything I see and hear. High energy. High intensity. High character. Brutally honest. Demanding. All characteristics that resonate with football players.
Estopinan: Sumrall seems to be doing and saying the right things. But the proof is in the pudding.
Odom: Summerall…..Fan! Straight shooter, no BS. You know where he is and so do his players. Recruiting at a high level and hired an outstanding staff.
Williams: Jon Sumrall reminds me of Urban Meyer. He is very energetic, and he understands that playing in the SEC, you have to develop the trenches. Seeing this recruiting class, he knows that you have to get o-line and d-line.
What are your thoughts on where Florida currently stands at your former position heading into the 2026 season?
Bilkie: You know where I stand on this one. It would be nice if they could find a player tough enough to play the fullback position and incorporate a few schemes with a lead blocker.
Estopinan: D-line seems to be a strong point, and depth looks to be there as well.
Odom: I like Florida’s backers. [Myles] Graham can run and has a physical presence. [Jaden] Robison and [Aaron] Chiles are vets who have played some. Both can play just need to be consistent in the block protection and coverage. Should be a good group.
Williams: [After starting out on defensive line] I finished up by playing left tackle. I believe it’s still a work in progress. However, I believe they will have it all together by the time they play Auburn.
Is there a player on the team who you believe is flying under the radar but will shine this year? Is there a player you believe needs to step up?
Bilkie: Receiver Eric Singleton Jr. I feel is a little overshadowed by the guys returning from last year’s team. The experience and elite speed are going to be so fun to watch.
Estopinan: Offensive lineman Bryce Lovett will be a good player for us. DBs and QB will be our biggest question marks.
Odom: [Ben] Hanks at cornerback, I think, he can be outstanding. He showed as a true freshman the SEC game was not too big for him. Excited to see year two and what growth he has had.
Players to step up have to be that talented group of receviers. It’s imperative they play at a high level and stay healthy with a youngish quarterback. The transfer from Wake [Forest] lit my ass up last year, so I think they are pretty good two deep wise. If the quarterback play is solid, which I think it will be, and Buster [Faulkner] can do a great job of creating mismatches and ways to hide their deficiencies.
Williams: That’s a hard question to answer. The player that is flying under the radar is cornerback [J’Vari] Flowers from South Florida. He played really well in the Florida State game last year.
The player who needs to step up probably would be Bryce Lovett. He was struggling last year, as we all know, but I believe he will be better this year due to better coaching.
Florida faces five opponents – #3 Georgia, #5 Texas, #9 Ole Miss, #10 Oklahoma, and #25 Missouri – who are ranked inside the top 25 of the AP Preseason Poll. Which game do you believe they are most likely to win?
Bilkie: I think we beat Ole Miss and Georgia this year.
Estopinan: Ole Miss and Missouri should both be wins. We need to pick where we left off there from last year. Should’ve won that game last year.
Odom: Ole Miss, Oklahoma, and Mizzou.
Williams: I believe we will win against Ole Miss, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Ole Miss and Oklahoma come to the Swamp and I believe Jon Sumerall will have the guys ready to play in front of our fans. Georgia and Texas will be tough, but I do believe that we will play them strong.
What is your prediction for Florida’s final 12-game regular-season record?
Bilkie: Record at the end of the season: 9-3.
Estopinan: If we can go 8-4, that’s success. If we pull off 9-3, next offseason recruiting will be lights out.
Odom: I think Florida can go 8-4/9-3. I will go with 9-3. I believe in this staff and how they coach. The future is bright.
Williams: I believe in Florida. So my prediction will be 9-3.
