Florida interim head coach Billy Gonzales, along with quarterback DJ Lagway, running back Jadan Baugh, center Jake Slaughter, and receiver J. Michael Sturdivant, met with the media on Saturday evening to discuss the Gators’ 40-21 win over Florida State.

BILLY GONZALES: Thank you. Appreciate y’all coming back out again today.
Just want to start off, what an unbelievable day for these seniors. They’re a special group. They did an unbelievable job. They continue to keep this team together. They continue to fight. They continue to push each other.
The leadership they provided from within, nobody really understands that, but being in their shoes, getting a chance to see Sapp out there sitting on the 50 yard line, just hanging out there, it’s really special.
I’m super, super proud of this team. Obviously it didn’t start the way we wanted to in the first couple games. I’ll tell you what, the way we finished today, it was the first time in my opinion we played a complete game offense, defense, special teams-wise.
I can’t be more proud of these guys. I’m super proud of the staff, the support staff. What a way to fight, taking a look at Jadan Baugh, second in history with 266 yards rushing today. What a workhorse. Offensive line did an incredible job giving him the opportunity to make those holes and continue to run.
Then the defensive unit, they played lights out. They were unbelievable today. The big boys up front did an unbelievable job setting the point up front, getting some pressure. At one point I looked out there, we had four true freshmen sitting in the back end.
It takes everybody on a football team to be successful. Finally we had that the last game of the season. I’m super proud of these guys. I can’t tell you that enough. I love’em.
I’ll open it up for questions at this time.
Q. Given all the struggles, how much did you need this to end?
BILLY GONZALES: Extremely important. It’s extremely important to end this way for the players that have invested into this program. The seniors, it’s extremely important. Obviously you want to walk out of here and have a good taste in your mouth from your very last game on a Senior Day.
I just told them it starts from this moment on, it’s going to continue to build for them for whoever comes in for this program and leads this program. It’s a steppingstone for them to understand that everything has to start at some point or another.
From this point on they got to continue to build on it. This team stayed together. I just talked to the team about staying together long-term, being focused together, being able to be able to achieve and continue to grow together.
Q. You’ve seen a lot of special performances. Jadan Baugh’s performance?
BILLY GONZALES: Just think about that, 266 yards. I know I told the media this earlier, I told you guys if you were to ask me is it important, I said yeah, but the victory is more important. Let’s call it what it is. I told the staff he’s getting a thousand yards regardless, somehow, some way. Two years ago we sat in here, Ricky was I think 35 yards short of a thousand yards at receiving. I know it eats at him. It eats at me every day to know it just didn’t bounce the right way at that particular time.
Looking back on it, being able to force feed to try to get him those yards. Tonight we were going to get Baugh a thousand yards. He surpassed it. I love him. I’ve told you before I love him as a person, athlete, a man. He’s just an exceptional football player.
Q. Is that a game where you get a feel early we have to keep running the football or did you sense it or see it early out there? 38 carries.
BILLY GONZALES: No, we talked about being able to feed him in the offense. I think Coach O’Hara called a great game today. No, we talked about featuring him. In order for us to win, we had to run the ball. We had to put the ball behind the offensive line. We have some seniors up there, both captains in this game today. Give them the opportunity to grind at it a little bit.
Again, put the ball in one of our best player’s, not the best player on the team, but one of the best players in the country. All-purpose yards, rushing yards, he’s elite. It’s fantastic to see the performance he had today.
Q. Thoughts on how DJ handled the offense, too?
BILLY GONZALES: He did fantastic. The one decision that he made, he looked at it on film. The corner, they were playing five deep. Could have tossed it but wanted to take the RPO shot. The DB did a good job. He broke, good football player as well. Made a great play. At the end of the day I thought he played really, really good. I thought he managed it. I thought he did a fantastic job. The yards obviously 168, but three TDs, did a really good job. He did a good job putting us in the right run plays.
I don’t know if you noticed, there were a lot of checked plays out there based on the defensive front, the rotation, what they were giving us in the back end, whether it was a two high structure or one high structure. He did a phenomenal job putting us in the right play.
Q. Given how last week’s performance was defensively, was that a message going into the week?
BILLY GONZALES: Yeah, these players are competitors. Everybody wants to compete. Everybody wants to try to make a play. It was about making sure, and we’ve said all along, Listen, just do your job. If you do your job… When you try to do a little bit more, try to make up something for somebody else, that’s when something happens. Super impressed, like I said. I think the defensive unit played lights out today. I told Caleb earlier how impressed I am and what it meant to me as a coach. He’s not my position, defensive line. Just how impressed I was that he fought back so much to come back off of a foot injury, to come back and play with his brothers for two last games. What it meant for him to finish that way. Obviously him and Sapp out there leading it. Like I said, you have a young crew, linebackers to the back end. What a great performance by those guys. They played outstanding all the way around.
Again for me, it was kind of a complete performance. Everybody played great offense, defense, special teams. I think when you can do that, you can kind of see what the University of Florida football players, what the football team is capable of.
Now it will be up to somebody else that they continue that process. The seed has been set. They can continue to grow. Those roots are in the ground. I look forward to watching them play in the future, as well.
Q. With the uncertainty for the program, the hire, what kind of becomes your message to the guys who have to make a decision of whether they stay or go?
BILLY GONZALES: I think that’s not really a question for me. I’d love for every individual here to stay at the University of Florida. I’ve said this before. The University of Florida is special. To me it’s special. Holds a place close to my heart because I’ve spent a lot of time here. It’s home.
But no, each and every one of these individuals.
Hopefully, again, I read a booklet to them that I had written down just in there a minute ago. Just talked about brotherhood. It talked about making sure, again, like I said, build on the right foundation, build brick by brick, step by step, then you build together. I think that’s the big piece I’m trying to leave them with, build it together. If you build it together, you’ll be successful.
Q. What does it mean for you to get a win as a head coach in this rivalry?
BILLY GONZALES: It means everything for the players, for me. I’ve told you this before. I got into this profession 30-plus years ago for the players. I had a couple really good position coaches, Skip Holtz Jr. and Coach Meyer that invested in me. Head coaches that invested in me. Coach Lubick, Coach Bruce. To me, it’s always been about investing back into the players. It will always be that. It means everything in the world that we won. Is it for me? Absolutely. But no, to me it’s more important that the players have a chance to get a victory ’cause they’re the ones that put so much time and effort into this place, blood, sweat and tears on the football field. Like I said, the brotherhood. That’s something you can never understand until you leave the locker room what it means to be in a locker room with your friends and brothers that you may not ever get that opportunity again. This team is done with. These players will hopefully continue to grow, stay in contact. Some of them will be in each other’s weddings later on down the road. That’s what you look for, too, for these players to continue to build that time.
Q. What are your takeaways from being the interim coach?
BILLY GONZALES: Well, that’s something we could probably talk about another time. What a great opportunity. I mean, what a learning experience for me. Great opportunity. Again, I’ll always go back to, it’s been about the players for me. If I can help them. My job was to try to keep this team together, continue to motivate them, continue to play hard. I think the effort that you saw out of those guys today, not to quit, not to fold, I think they did an unbelievable job of showing that support out there for one another.
Q. You talked about when you first became the interim that a goal of yours is to try to stay at Florida. Is that still a goal of yours or something you think about?
BILLY GONZALES: Listen, I’m going to enjoy this win tonight. I’m going to go home, 8:30, might turn the hot tub on here real quick before I leave the facility, relax a little bit. No. Again, I can tell you again, I spent the majority of my career here. Special place. The University of Florida is special. I’ve said before. You play for the patch, you honor the name on your back for the players. It is a special place.
I look forward to, again, the success of the program, regardless whether I’m here or not. I want these players to experience the success that I’ve had here at the University of Florida ’cause it’s special.
My opportunity here. I said with this being my last opportunity to speak with you, I’d like to take a moment to that happening Mr. Scott Stricklin for the opportunity to lead this program the last six weeks. I know we didn’t get the results the way we wanted, the way we wanted to win, the way I wanted to win. I appreciate the trust he had in me to do the job and lead the team. With a victory finishing it, it makes it even a little bit more special.
I’d like to thank the players for sticking together and staying the course over the last few weeks. I’ve told you this before, to me it’s always been about the players, it will always be about the players. That’s why we’re called coaches. It’s about mentoring and being able to help them grow as individuals and men.
I’d like to thank you all, the media, for your professionalism and generosity during my time leading the program. You have been unbelievable to me. I want to thank you. I think you asked a question about the learning part. To me as a coach, I will always embrace the media. I will always embrace the fans. I think that’s the special piece about having an opportunity to be a coach, to have that opportunity. I want to thank you guys a ton.
Finally, like I said, I’d like to thank the fans that supported this team despite the results this season. I’ve told you before, I believe they’re the best fans in the country. They deserve a championship. They’re going to have a championship. They will have a championship-caliber team here in the future, as well. Thank you guys all again. I appreciate you guys. Go Gators.
DJ LAGWAY
Q. What does it mean to end a tough season against your guys’ rival?
JD LAGWAY: Yeah, for sure, it’s always great to end the season on a good note. I feel like we clicked offensively. We ran the ball at will. I feel like just a great day at the park.
Q. Jadan’s performance, have you had a back rush for 250 plus?
JD LAGWAY: Oh, no. Easy day at the ballpark having a guy like him, man. He comes in every single day and works. I’m so excited for him and his future. It’s going to be great.
Q. Winning against rivals is important. You’re the first quarterback since Tim Tebow to start out 2-0 against Florida State. What does that mean to you?
JD LAGWAY: Yeah, for sure, man, that’s all I care about. I care about the logo, the brand. University of Florida has done so much for me and my family. I’m truly thankful. I’m just honored to be a part of just great culture here, great fan base, everybody that’s around. I’m blessed to be here.
Q. You’ve reiterated you want to be a Gator going forward. How are you going to reflect on that with the coaching change?
JD LAGWAY: Yeah, for sure, obviously want to see who we bring in. At this point I’m a Florida Gator. I’m happy and blessed to be here, so yeah.
Q. What did you think about your play tonight, your performance?
JD LAGWAY: Yeah, solid. I made some throws when it was time to make throws. Like I said, man, every single game feel like I’m getting a little better and better. That’s all you can ask for. I feel like it was a solid way to go into next year. I’m excited to build off that.
Q. First game with three touchdown passes since the season opener. How far do you think you’ve come?
JD LAGWAY: Man, I’ve come so far. Just everything that I’ve been through this whole year, it’s truly a blessing just to be out there and compete with my guys. Just all the tears and all the blood, sweat, everything, just to get to this moment. Truly a blessing. A lot of people don’t realize that, how much it took to get on the field. I’m thankful to be able to play football today. It was good.
Q. I’m sure it helps to end the year on a positive note. How do you go about the next few days? Sit back and wait and see?
JD LAGWAY: Yeah, I’m really just focused on me. Get right back to work Monday. Big off-season for me. Get to have an off-season, so I’m excited for that. Just use everything to my advantage.
The season didn’t go how we wanted it to. Instead of looking back at it, sulking about it, using this extra time to get better, get my body better, work on the things I need to work on.
Q. When you look back at day one, what do you think the biggest thing that you learned from this year was?
JD LAGWAY: Hmm…
Biggest thing I learned from this year, through the good and bad, you have to come to work every day, put your best foot forward. There was days being the first and last one in the building. When things weren’t looking bright, when you just want to be at home, be staying away from everybody. But being in the building every single day, just grinding it out.
One thing I realized every rep is priceless. Like Coach Napier always said, this is a practice sport. You can’t just go out there and jump out there and play it. You got to practice. You got to go through different situations. I learned so much from that.
I learned how to take better mental reps, you know what I mean? Just seeing how to do things and things like that. I took a lot from just learning how to take care of my body, little things like that. It’s been a hard year, don’t get me wrong, but I’m thankful for all of it.
Q. How will that build you as a better athlete?
JD LAGWAY: Man, this year I’ll never forget. I know God got something good for me in the future. I’m just excited to take it day by day, use my platform to give Him glory.
Q. What do you think the new coach is going to inherit?
JD LAGWAY: Yeah, I feel like he’s going to inherit a bunch of hard-working guys, a lot of guys that’s been through the fire, a lot of guys that want success and know what that looks like, but being able to get the pieces and things to be able to do that on a consistent level. I think that’s what’s new coach is going to get from the guys that return.
Q. Are you excited for the next steps?
JD LAGWAY: Yeah, I’m definitely excited just to see who we bring in, things like that. Like I said, I’m just going to control what I can control. I know who I am as a player, I know what I can do. Just trying to get better at my game and light it up next year, so yeah.
Q. Take us through the third quarter. Defense makes a stop, ball back to you, 17-14 game, you throw the touchdown pass. Tell me a little about that momentum shift at that point.
JD LAGWAY: For sure. We had a package in there to get Aaron Chiles in there. That’s who we wanted to get the ball to. They ended up covering him. A good call by Coach O’Hara. We call it our late find. Third or fourth progression, he popped open. I gave him the ball. Good moment for him to get in the end zone and stuff like that.
Q. When you started the season and had some early struggles, was there ever any consideration of shutting it down given the off-season you have?
JD LAGWAY: Yeah, no, I never thought about shutting it down even when things don’t look great. I kind of knew what I was getting myself into, not having an off-season. If I’m going to have a bad season, I would expect it to be on the season where I didn’t have an off-season. That’s what I’m excited about next year. I’m getting right to work. I’m excited. I got my plan, my people around me. We’re going to make this thing go. I’m excited to continue each and every day, work on the things I need to work on.
Q. Will you need any off-season work?
JD LAGWAY: No, I came out clean. I’m thankful for that. Thankful for the staff, Paul Silvestri, training room. It’s been a long season. They’ve been with me every step of the way. I’m thankful for those guys up there.
Q. The season just ended, but anything that you thought about going into this off-season that you want to work on the most?
JD LAGWAY: Man, yeah. I’ve kind of started on the things I want to work on. I’d say after the Kentucky game, after I got benched, I took a day and I kind of sat back to say, all right, off-season coming up. I’m thinking about what do I want to get better at. I might as well start now.
Just working on footwork. I want to get my body right, get back in shape. Willis DJ Lagway 2023 National Player of the Year in shape. Just feel good and have an off-season. That’s what I’m excited for.
Q. You have a couple seniors on the offensive line. All the seniors around. What was it like to get them a win to go out on top?
JD LAGWAY: It meant everything to me. They played their butts off. They fought so hard. Amazing leaders. I’m thankful for those guys up front, man. Just true professionals. They showed me and a lot of younger guys how to do it. I’m truly thankful for those guys.
Q. I don’t want to focus on the negative, but back to the Kentucky loss, how much of a teaching moment was that for you?
JD LAGWAY: Yeah, for sure. Definitely a teaching moment for sure. Just going through that adversity. Still seeing, being that leader when that time happened, not shutting it down. I feel like my guys still looked at me as the leader. I was there for my guys, helping Tramell. He is going to be a heck of a player. I’m excited for him. It was just a big learning moment. Slowing things down for myself, getting back to the basics. Nobody is in the room, just doing drops, working on no throws, no receivers, just me by myself, headphones on, working on little things. That’s what I’m excited to continue to do.
I feel like the last few weeks it definitely paid off. My footwork in the pocket is getting a little better. I’m excited for the growth, excited to just continue to get better.

JADAN BAUGH
Q. I’m sure you’ve thought about how impressive this performance is. What does it mean to be on a list with Emmitt Smith?
JADAN BAUGH: Like I told the radio earlier, I’m doing something right. Being in a category with those guys, it’s just amazing. I don’t think I can wrap my head around it yet.
Being able to shoot for a standard, I feel they did they job when they were here, they put me in a position to shoot for that.
Q. Coach mentioned you were focused on getting the win, but he knew he wanted to get you to that mark. What was that message during the week?
JADAN BAUGH: Just prepare the right way. Coach Gonzales coaching me very hard, not just on the offensive side of the ball, even in the special teams part. He’s been there with us.
He critiques a lot of things just to make us better. I feel like having him around, being able to get coached by him, it’s a great opportunity.
Q. You score there at the end. Seems like you wanted to make a statement against Florida State. Did you feel like that?
JADAN BAUGH: Shoot, coach told me don’t score. He told me to slot. I’m like, Coach, don’t do me like that. We don’t like them guys. I feel like it was good for our team to just score at the end of the game.
Q. Most yards ever gained in this series. What does that mean to you?
JADAN BAUGH: I don’t think I can too much wrap my head around it yet. Tomorrow it will be very, like, eye-opening. Like I said, I haven’t wrapped my head around it yet.
Q. Was it something you knew early in the game you had it today?
JADAN BAUGH: Well, it started on Sunday, just going into the facility understanding everything, just focusing on a mission, understanding we still have a mission to finish out the season.
Q. Talk about when you’re involved in the offense, good things are going to happen.
JADAN BAUGH: I think I have a great impact. Also just not me on the field. It’s the tight ends, the O-line, the receivers, the quarterback. I feel like having all those guys around me, I feel like that we’re one of the best teams in the country when we’re (indiscernible).
Q. 27-carry game against Mississippi. This is 38 carries. The physicality of the game, how you stood up. I know you’re a strong kid.
JADAN BAUGH: Can you repeat that again?
Q. Being able to withstand the number of carries you had.
JADAN BAUGH: Yeah, honestly preparing the right way. Like I said last week, me going into the facility just staying in the treatment room, outside of the facility doing the right things to get my body prepared for situations like this.
Q. We in the off-season heard you were the strongest player of the team. Do you feel like you’re just built for performances like this?
JADAN BAUGH: Oh, yeah, like I said, being in the off-season and preparing the right way, getting my body ready for games like this, a season like we had. I just feel like being able to be as strong as I am, it helps me going through the season.
Q. Was getting 1K this year a goal for you entering the season?
JADAN BAUGH: Honestly, I’m not going to lie, I didn’t too much think about it. I was more focused on becoming a better leader, being a great teammate for the guys surrounding me, understanding the game a lot more.
Q. Have you decided what you’re going to do with the coaching change?
JADAN BAUGH: I ain’t too much thought about it. It was more finishing the season, being with my guys. We’ve been here since day one. Being with Coach Nape, him bringing us in, putting trust into me, the guys that are around me, I know that helped me in a situation to just enjoy the moment.
Q. How do you handle it going forward? Sit back, wait and watch?
JADAN BAUGH: Yeah. Again, I’m never focused on future things. I’m always focused on the moment. Life is short. Focusing on the moment, just enjoying everything that’s in front of me, I feel like that’s the way to go.
Q. What did it mean to send the seniors out on a high note?
JADAN BAUGH: Everything to me, honestly, because that’s what coach preached all week: send the seniors out on a good note. They put in blood, sweat and tears every day when they come out there. It’s not they have an off day. No, it was more them trying to improve every day. You could see it.
Q. How excited was Ja’Kobi and Coach Juluke after the game?
JADAN BAUGH: Ja’Kobi, he came to the sideline I think about halftime, he said, You got to get in the box. You can’t keep running the ball.
He pushes me every day. Even when he’s not on the field, he pushing me every day to be the best person I can. Coach Juluke is one of the best running back coaches in America. I feel that heavy. Him talking to me every day, pushing me the right way, I feel like that made me the player I am today.
Q. How many years have you been a full-time running back?
JADAN BAUGH: This is my second year.
Q. Even going back to high school?
JADAN BAUGH: Yeah, my second year. I played more receiver and defense.
Q. Pretty good.
JADAN BAUGH: Yeah (smiling).
Q. You were asked about the future. You left a strong impression with whoever is coming in here.
JADAN BAUGH: Yeah, definitely. Again, I always try to go out and play my hardest because you never know who is watching. I was taught when I was a little kid coming all the way up. Leaving a great impression, first impression is your last impression. I was always taught that.
Q. You made a good one.
JADAN BAUGH: (Laughter).
JAKE SLAUGHTER
Q. What did it mean to be able to end a tough season on a high note like that against your rival?
JAKE SLAUGHTER: It meant everything to us. Our message all week was nothing else matters. As soon as we got here, we got back from Thanksgiving, 24 hours, this is everything that matters right now. Nothing else. I think everybody did a great job. Our defense played their heart out. Jadan ran like somebody was trying to kill him all night. I think we played pretty well all around.
Q. Does this give you something to reflect on this season, to end like this against Florida State…
JAKE SLAUGHTER: No, absolutely it did. Big smile on my face.
Q. Jake, when you look back at the beginning of the season, the last month and a half, everything that Coach Gonzales was able to accomplish, what does it mean to you?
JAKE SLAUGHTER: It means the world to us. I think every player in the building has nothing but love and deep respect for Coach G. I’ve had the privilege of knowing him a long time. I got to play with his boy in high school. It’s something that we were super excited for. I never got to dump Gatorade on a coach, but we got him good.
Q. I figured you knew coming into the game he was on the cusp of a thousand yards. What did you realize he was hitting these big marks, if you knew during the game?
JAKE SLAUGHTER: Oh, it was like he got jumped on the sideline (laughter). We knew going into the game he was right around a hundred yards off or so. He had a tremendous first half. A great second half, too. It was like he was getting jumped on the sideline, everyone was so excited for him.
Q. When did you learn specifically it’s the second all time in a game?
JAKE SLAUGHTER: Coach G let us know after the game. I had no idea.
Q. You mentioned the Gatorade bath. How did that go down? Who all doused him?
JAKE SLAUGHTER: Austin Barber organized it. I’d like to point that out. Old 58, he made sure. We had a lot of fun. I think anytime as an offensive lineman you run the ball like we did tonight, you take pride in games like this. It’s a lot of fun. Great way to go out.
Q. Who dumped him officially?
JAKE SLAUGHTER: Austin and I, we tag-teamed it.
Q. What does it mean for this to be your final memory to go out like this?
JAKE SLAUGHTER: It means the world to me. This is all I ever wanted being a little kid, growing up in north central Florida. This is what I wanted forever.
Q. You’re going to be moving on. What do you think the new coach will be inheriting?
JAKE SLAUGHTER: These guys won’t have any quit in them. This entire group, no quit. I wish everybody could see the tape on a Tuesday afternoon team run, it’s warfare in there. We’re 3-8, who cares, we’re going to go to war, and we’re getting better right now.
I think that’s important for people to know. There’s no quit in this crew. Guys love each other and take care of each other.
Q. Jadan shouldered the load. What did you see in DJ’s performance tonight?
JAKE SLAUGHTER: I thought he was super efficient, got the ball out on time. Everything is connected, right? We spotted on the first drive, it was offensive line, it was quarterback, it was everybody. You know what I mean? As soon as you start going 11 for 11, firing on all cylinders, that’s when good offensive football happens. DJ did a great job all night.
Q. Did you sense early on that you guys could play with that kind of physicality throughout the game?
JAKE SLAUGHTER: Yeah, absolutely. It was good to know. You go in there and you’re running the ball well, that’s exactly what you want to feel.
Q. What can you say about the future of this offensive line, some of the guys that will be stepping up?
JAKE SLAUGHTER: I’m so excited for next year. Jason Zandamela is an absolute animal. I’m so excited for him to play. He’s gotten better and better. Guys like Rod are going to step up. Caden Jones, Bryce Lovett are going to continue to get better. They really improved. I’m trying to think about who else. There’s so many young guys who made these big strides. I’m so excited for them.
Q. Who do you think fill Austin’s shoes?
JAKE SLAUGHTER: That’s hard to say. Caden Jones looked good. He took some reps at left the last few weeks. Could be him.
Q. You talk about Austin Barber quite a bit this year. What kind of impact has he had?
JAKE SLAUGHTER: I love that guy like a brother. He’s a guy that we can bounce stuff off of each other. It’s funny. We were arguing like old ladies Thursday practice because we had a difference of opinion on a concept and call. That’s something you get only with a guy you have that type of relationship with. I’m so thankful I had Austin these last five years.
Q. Billy just showed us a folder that had what he wanted to say to you guys afterwards. Can you give us an idea of what he talked about? Moving forward for this program, what do you want to see?
JAKE SLAUGHTER: I think it’s important to note the first thing that he talked about was what we discussed in chapel this morning, that was having a foundation in Christ, having a strong foundation to build off of. I think that’s so important for all ball players, young men in general. That’s the type of guy Coach G is. He talked about our plans going forward, detailed calendar for everybody. He was just so proud. He let us know little stat by stat, let us know about the rushing record, Jadan. It was just a special moment for me.

“He approached it the best way he could. I think he is a great coach. Obviously, I committed to come play for him. Playing every day for him was a blessing. I think the team fed off his energy very well and I think it was good to send him out with a win.”
