The Florida Gators (2-3, 1-1) were able to secure an SEC and top 10-win Saturday against the No. 9 Texas Longhorns (3-2, 0-1) at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium with a final of UF 29 – UT 21. An electric performance and debut from true freshman Dallas Wilson helped Florida pull off the upset.
IT WAS OVER WHEN: When Jordan Castell picked of Arch Manning Florida already felt like they were rolling in the 4th quarter. Up 15 points, and Texas had just gotten back-to-back false start calls. Arch drops back and looks only to toss one straight into the hands of Jordan Castell. Not to mention Arch threw another pick to Devin Moore just a few minutes later, but I think the fans could feel it after the 1st pick, but Texas did give them a little scare at the end.
THEY STOLE THE SHOW: Dallas Wilson The Gator Nation has been foaming at the mouth waiting for the opportunity to see true freshman receiver Dallas Wilson. Ever since the spring game, fans have been waiting to see Wilson in action, and he did not disappoint with 6 catches for 111 yards along with two touchdowns. It’s the most receptions, yards, and touchdowns for a Gator in their first career start. He will be a monster all year for Florida.
THESE STATS DON’T LIE: Jadan Baugh averaged 4 yards per carry on 27 attempts. It felt like in this game that Florida finally decided to do what the Gator Nation has been screaming at them to do all season, game plan around Jadan Baugh. He was the bread and butter for the Gators’ offense all game, and if they want success to continue, they will keep feeding him. The load of carries Florida is giving Baugh takes all the attention off the pass game and allows DJ Lagway to have more time in the pocket. If they continue to game plan around Baugh, Florida could win a lot more games.
THIS MATCHUP PROVED KEY: Florida Defensive line vs Texas Offensive line. If you want to point out why Texas lost this game, it lies right here. Florida dominated every aspect of the line of scrimmage when it came to this game. Whether it was the running backs trying to get to the second level or harassing Arch Manning in the pocket, the defensive line swallowed them whole. The Gators finished with 4 sacks and 5 TFL’s. The defensive line for Florida was the foundation for the Gator win.
WHAT A PLAY: Dallas Wilson for a 55-yard touchdown at the end of the 3rd quarter.
UP NEXT: Florida heads to College Station next week to take on the Longhorns’ archrival the Texas A&M Aggies, while Texas will have a bye week before the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma.
