The summer is flying by, and the Florida Gators’ 2025 campaign is quickly approaching. As the players and coaches prepare for their August 30 kickoff against Long Island, Inside the Gators’ staff members took stock of the roster to break down our list of the ’25 most valuable players’ for the 2025 season.
It is based on who we believe are the 25 most valuable players. These are not necessarily the best players, but the most valuable in relation to the team having a successful 2025 season.
Christian Alvis, Lance Williams, and Mark Wheeler compiled their list of the 25 most valuable Florida players, combined them, assigned a point value (25 points for a #1 vote down to 1 point for a #25 vote), and here’s how the final tally worked out (ballots and points in parentheses).
Note: The ranking isn’t based on a straight points system (25 points for a #1 placement down to 1 point for a #25 placement). A consensus mattered more, so one person’s opinion didn’t carry more weight than the group as a whole. This way, a player who appears on all three ballots, but has fewer overall points, will be higher than a player who appears on two ballots with more points.
No. 8-George Gumbs Jr. (3-ballots | 46-points)
- Position: Edge
- Class: Senior (RS-TR)
- Size: 6-foot-4, 250-pounds
Alvis Analysis: Edge George Gumbs Jr. seemed like a guy who was on no one’s mind when the season started, but was very consistent throughout the year. He slowly worked his way into the starting lineup with his consistency and finished second on the team in TFL’s and sacks. (Voted: No. 9)
Lance’s Last Word: Edge George Gumbs Jr. was second on the team in tackles-for-loss in 2024 despite starting just three games. The redshirt senior should be a week-one starter this season. He’s ready for a big year. (Voted: No. 14)
On the Mark: IF George Gumbs Jr. produces as well as he looks, the Gator Nation might be in for a special type of season from the former tight end. As I wrote prior to last season, just going off his testing numbers, Florida might have found a hidden gem. He then, while still learning the position, had a a so-so season with five sacks. Seeing him come out of the facility over the spring, he looked like he had been living in the weight room. He certainly looks the part, but will he get enough snaps in a crowded Edge room to push him toward a double-digit sack number? (Voted: No. 9)
No. 7-Devin Moore (3-ballots | 50-points)
- Position: Cornerback
- Class: Senior
- Size: 6-foot-3, 198-pounds
Alvis Analysis: His best game last season was against Kentucky, where he had two pass breakups and an interception. Both Moore and Cormani McClain will most likely get a serious amount of snaps at the corner position, and if they can see eye to eye these two can be a dangerous duo. (Voted: No. 11)
Lance’s Last Word: Senior Devin Moore has the potential to be a reliable cornerback for Florida; he just needs to stay healthy. Overall, the Gators’ defensive back room was stretched thin last season due to injury. It’s a young group in 2025, Moore looks to be a leader. (Voted: No. 15)
On the Mark: The old saying, ‘The best ability is availability,’ could have been written with cornerback Devin Moore in mind. When he is out there, he has proven to be one of the better cover corners on the team. However, being and staying out there has proven to be a problem, with him playing in but 19 out of a possible 38 career games to this point. UF doesn’t have great numbers at the cornerback position this season, meaning his health is of the utmost concern. (Voted: No. 2)
